Religion in Politics

CGG Weekly by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

In an era of mounting secularism, it is intriguing that religion has become an integral part of the election debate for the Republican nomination for President of the United States. Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, an ordained Baptist minister, openly admits that his faith influences his policy decisions, contributing to his surge in popularity and strong second-place ranking in Iowa. Similarly, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney addressed concerns about his Mormon beliefs in a speech at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library, asserting that no church authorities would influence his presidential decisions and emphasizing his commitment to serve only the common cause of the American people. Despite their claims of piety, skepticism remains about their motives, as both candidates appear to play the religion card to gain the voting power of the Religious Right, potentially using faith as a tool to achieve temporal power. History shows that religion and politics often mix poorly, with one corrupting the other through delusions of power, and Americans are urged to discern the difference between a religious person and a righteous one, especially when so much is at stake.
