Psalm Genres (Part Three A): Messianic
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughPsalm 118 belongs to a list of eleven psalms that contain major portions foretelling the life, character, ministry, death, or sovereign rulership of Christ in the Kingdom of God. These psalms are classified as Messianic because their authors, under divine inspiration, prophesy of the coming Savior in either His first or second coming. The category overlaps with royal psalms, which frequently address kingship and coronation themes yet apply ultimately to the Messiah as King of kings. Psalm 118 is distinguished from the many other psalms that contain only isolated Messianic verses by the sustained prophetic content found across substantial sections of the composition. This placement situates the psalm within the larger argument that the book of Psalms constitutes a principal storehouse of Old Testament prophecies concerning Christ, consistent with His own statement that the Psalms speak of Him.
