Promiscuity contributes to societal decline, as seen in historical patterns and current Western trends, with high divorce rates and out-of-wedlock births reflecting a devaluation of marriage. The sexual revolution, spurred by the Kinsey Report, normalized multiple partners and illicit liaisons, even among teens, leading to high teen pregnancy rates and social hardships for unwed mothers. God's command against sexual immorality seeks to protect from such adversities, emphasizing abstinence until marriage for a better life. Marriage is honorable, and its bed undefiled, but fornicators and adulterers face judgment. Illicit acts unite individuals as one flesh, akin to sacrilegious behavior, binding them in a way God deems precious only within marriage.

In Defense of Marriage

CGG Weekly by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

The rise of promiscuity has significantly contributed to societal decline, mirroring historical patterns seen in ancient Rome. Rome flourished as a republic with a strong adherence to traditional family values and an absence of divorce, but its slow decline began when easy divorce and open promiscuity devalued the marriage covenant. Similarly, in America and the Western world, divorce and promiscuity became prevalent after World War II, with divorce rates around 50% and out-of-wedlock sex nearly universal. Approximately a third of births in America are illegitimate, reflecting a profound shift in moral standards. This erosion of the marriage institution signals a critical point in the timeline of societal decay, as no society has endured long after demeaning the sanctity of marriage.

The Curse of Teen Pregnancy

CGG Weekly by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Public acceptance of celebrity promiscuity may contribute to the high teen-pregnancy rate in the United States, which stands as the highest among developed nations. Statistics reveal that in 2004, nearly 36 percent of live births in America were to unmarried mothers, with almost a quarter of these being teenagers. The birth rate for teens rose in 2006, marking the first increase since 1991, indicating a worsening situation. In 1970, only 10.7 percent of U.S. births were to unwed mothers, but by 2000, the illegitimacy rate exceeded one-third, reflecting a 335 percent jump over three decades. This alarming trend is a facet of the sexual revolution that began in the 1950s and 60s, contributing to various social ills. Teen pregnancy often leads to a lifetime of hardship for young mothers, shackling them to the constant demands of childcare and limiting their educational and career opportunities. Socially, these mothers face diminished prospects for marriage and often endure minimal support from the child's father. Studies also highlight a link between unmarried motherhood and depression, with significant emotional and mental health challenges that can impact both mother and child. God's command against sexual immorality carries a deep love, aiming to protect young women from the adversities of single motherhood. The wise path remains abstinence until marriage, a choice that greatly enhances quality of life.

Marriage—A God-Plane Relationship (Part Seven)

CGG Weekly by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

The doors of promiscuity have been flung wide open since the publication of the Kinsey Report in the late 1940s and early 1950s, spawning the sexual revolution. Nowadays, it raises few eyebrows that some have multiple sexual partners, even before graduating from high school. While Americans of all beliefs shake their heads in consternation over scandalous behavior, the truth is that such illicit liaisons are quite commonplace in Main-Street America. God does not consider the sexual union of man and wife as cheap, and as the author of Hebrews writes, Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge. To Him, it is so valuable that every time a person engages in it, he more intimately binds himself to his spouse, making marriage even more precious. Paul plainly states that, as the conjugal relations of a couple bind them together like glue, so also does the illicit act of a man and a harlot unite them as one flesh, revealing a spiritual correspondence to sacrilegious behavior when members of the church give themselves over to un-Christian conduct.
