This quality arises after knowledge is gathered, through meditation on experience and counsel, and it produces the practical skill in living that constitutes biblical wisdom. Understanding is presented as discernment that enables one to perceive the likely outcome of a circumstance and thereby avoid entrapment by wrong influences or desires. Proverbs links understanding inseparably with wisdom, declaring that skill in living is supreme and that one should obtain it at any cost while also acquiring the ability to distinguish. This pairing precedes righteousness, because right choices flow from understanding and wisdom rather than arising automatically. The same pursuit, when carried out with wholehearted commitment, yields the knowledge of God, described not as mere opinion but as the relational awareness that constitutes eternal life. Attaining understanding therefore demands that one treat it as a treasure, incline the mind toward it, cry out for it, and search for it with the sustained exertion required to mine silver ore. Such diligent seeking overcomes the distractions of human nature, the world, and adversarial forces, resulting in the fear of the Lord as the foundation for lasting success.
