South Africa's Land Confiscation
Commentary by Richard T. RitenbaughSouth Africa is facing significant challenges, with recent developments signaling a troubling path. On Tuesday, the South African parliament passed a motion for land expropriation from white farmers without compensation, initiated by the radical left party, Economic Freedom Fighters, led by the Marxist Julius Malema. This motion, which passed with a landslide vote of 241 to 83, aligns with the ruling African National Congress government's platform under President Cyril Ramaphosa. Although the country's constitution must be amended to enable this confiscation, the black parties hold the necessary votes to push it forward despite bureaucratic obstacles. Malema's version of the bill proposes that even black individuals will not own the land post-confiscation; instead, the government will control it, allocating it through bureaucrats to those deemed in need. Malema has declared that the time for reconciliation is over, now calling for justice, and has previously made ominous statements about not yet calling for violence against white people. This trajectory mirrors the destructive path of Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, under Robert Mugabe, whose fast-track land reform led to economic collapse, displacing over a million farm workers and drastically reducing agricultural production. In South Africa, signs of a similar decline are emerging, with about half a million white South Africans having left the country in the last 30 years and over 100,000 more expected to emigrate in the next five years. Migration consultant Emma Waldorf from Cape Town reports a surge in emigration inquiries not only from white individuals but also from black, colored, and Indian clients, all recognizing the country's potential downfall. The exodus includes skilled professionals, tradespeople, craftsmen, entrepreneurs, and experienced corporate employees, rapidly depleting South Africa's skilled workforce. This pattern echoes Zimbabwe's fate under Mugabe, suggesting that South Africa may soon face comparable devastation as these policies are implemented.
