Israel's Restoration and the Zeitgeist of Zeal

Sermon by Charles Whitaker (1944-2021)

God's ultimate aim is to bring people to spiritual salvation, which includes the restoration and renewal of the old along the path to a new creation. In the years following Christ's return, God will undertake the prophesied work of regathering and restoring Israel, demonstrating His role as a master delegator by sharing responsibilities and rewards with others. This restoration process adds value to Israel, introducing something new and of great worth that was not present before. By regathering, God will search the lands of Israel's enemies to find and return scattered Israelites to the Land of Promise, as foretold by Isaiah and Jeremiah. Isaiah 11:11 states that the Lord will set His hand a second time to recover the remnant of His people from Assyria and Egypt. Jeremiah 16:14-15 declares that the Lord will bring them back from the north and all lands where He had driven them, into the land given to their fathers. Restoration, on the other hand, involves actions to bring Israel back into God's favor, including returning them to prominence among nations. This restoration encompasses a single act of forgiveness on the Day of Atonement, as mentioned in Zechariah 3:9, and a gradual process of increasing wealth and prestige, as described in Isaiah 60:10-11. In Jeremiah 30, during the time of Jacob's trouble, God promises to bring back from captivity His people Israel and Judah, returning them to the land of their fathers. Jeremiah 30:3 affirms that the days are coming when God will cause them to possess it again. Further, in Jeremiah 30:8-9, God vows to break the yoke of oppression from their necks, ensuring they serve the Lord their God and David their king, whom He will raise up for them. This restoration is set in the context of God's determined purpose to regather and restore national Israel in the latter days. Ezekiel 37:21-22 reveals God's plan to gather the children of Israel from among the nations and make them one nation in the land, no longer divided into two kingdoms. Ezekiel 37:24 states that David, God's servant, shall be king over them, and they shall have one shepherd, walking in His judgments and observing His statutes. Moreover, Ezekiel 37:26-27 promises a covenant of peace, an everlasting covenant, with God's sanctuary set in their midst forevermore, affirming that He will be their God, and they shall be His people. This restoration includes a profound transformation, as Ezekiel 36:26-27 describes God giving Israel a new heart and a new spirit, removing the heart of stone and putting His Spirit within them to enable obedience to His statutes. This addition of the Holy Spirit ensures that Israel will never again backslide, securing their faithfulness under the New Covenant, a covenant of peace that will remain, as stated in Isaiah 54:10. Through these actions, God positions Israel for a significant role in carrying out His will worldwide.
