God enters names in His book and possesses the prerogative to remove them. Whoever has sinned against God will be blotted out of His book. If a person turns away to serve other gods, every curse settles on him, and God blots out his name from under heaven. All the righteousness a man has done shall not be remembered because of his unfaithfulness. The three kings began well yet turned aside, rejecting the offer of repentance, and their names were omitted. Continuing in the faith grounded and steadfast is required, or the name is blotted out. God allows choice, even to choose eternal death.

Why Three Kings Are Missing From Matthew 1

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh

God enters names in His book and possesses the prerogative to remove names as well. Whoever has sinned against God will be blotted out of His book. The Lord will not spare the one whose heart turns away to serve other gods. Every curse written in the book will settle on that person and the Lord will blot out his name from under heaven. All the righteousness which a man has done shall not be remembered because of the unfaithfulness of which he is guilty and the sin which he has committed. When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity and dies in it, it is because of the iniquity which he has done that he dies. The three kings began well yet turned aside. They rejected the offer of repentance and their names were omitted from the ancestry list of Jesus Christ. Continuing in the faith grounded and steadfast is the test of the reality of faith. If one does not continue, the name is blotted out.

Three Missing Kings (Part Two)

'Personal' from John W. Ritenbaugh

God enters names into the Book of Life and erases names from it. Whoever has sinned against God, He will blot him out of His book. The principle applies under the covenant. If a person turns away from God to serve other gods, every curse settles on him, and God blots out his name from under heaven. The three kings began by doing what was right in the sight of the Lord. After their anchors died or their pride swelled, they turned aside. God sent prophets to call them to repentance, but they hardened their hearts. All the righteousness which a man has done shall not be remembered because of the unfaithfulness of which he is guilty. God requires individual responsibility and continuing in the faith grounded and steadfast. He who endures to the end shall be saved.

What Happens to Those Who Don't Obey the Gospel?

Sermonette by David C. Grabbe

Mankind has a problem with finality, especially the prospect of eternal death. Those who reject the Gospel are choosing the second death in the Lake of Fire.

Free Will or God's Sovereignty?

Sermon by David C. Grabbe

Even as names are written in His Book from the beginning, so also names can be blotted out. This shows that the sovereign God allows His people to choose, and to choose poorly, and even to choose eternal death. The natural branches were broken off because of unbelief. God would cut them off also if they did not continue in goodness. All these parables and other teachings show that eternal security is a comfortable lie that has been foisted on professing Christians. It is a variation on, You shall not surely die, spoken by the serpent. On one hand, many astounding witnesses of Scripture testify of God's sovereignty and His absolute ability to bring to pass anything He wants. On the other hand, examples show that the same sovereign God allows His people to choose, and to choose poorly, and even to choose eternal death. Scripture cannot be broken. The question, then, is how these two seemingly-opposing forces work together. God is responsible for calling. He is responsible for His Spirit working with. He is responsible for creating circumstances to both test character as well as to build it. He is responsible for every instance of grace every gift bestowed as one travels this path. The called have the freedom and the responsibility to choose to submit to God in every circumstance that He creates or allows others to create, as well as those circumstances that one creates. God is sovereign, and in His sovereignty, He gave mankind free choice. What mankind does not have is all the options at any given time. Because God is the perfect Parent, He trains His children. He hedges in and limits options to those that are according to His purpose. But love for Him must be sufficient to cooperate, and to make the choices that result with the ending where one hears, Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.
