The Falling Away
Sermonette by David C. GrabbeThe scope of the prophesied falling away is obviously international, affecting the entire world, involving a dramatic global rejection of even basic truth.
The Falling Away
'Prophecy Watch' by David C. GrabbeIn II Thessalonians 2, Paul warns of a significant falling away that must occur before the return of Jesus Christ. This falling away, derived from the Greek word apostasia, signifies a defection from truth, a forsaking of God's way in favor of alien belief systems. As seen in historical contexts within the Old Testament, such rebellion often involved kings and the nation of Israel turning away from God to opposing beliefs. This prophesied event is not merely a localized occurrence within a small group but a unique, worldwide phenomenon that sets the stage for the man of sin, who will wield tremendous influence over mankind, backed by the power of satan. Paul's message indicates that the events leading to the Day of the Lord will be unmistakable to those with eyes to see, affecting the entire world, though its spiritual significance may not be grasped by all. A falling away is indeed taking place now, marked by a steady defection from basic biblical principles and the Judeo-Christian ethic. This is not a sudden shift but a gradual process, accelerating over time, making it harder to recognize as minds adjust to the ongoing rebellion against God and His way. The truth forsaken in this falling away is not abstract but relates directly to God, encompassing even the basic reality of a Creator who requires mankind's worship. Today, there is a growing denial of this truth, with theories like evolution serving as props to avoid facing the existence of a Creator. Additionally, the fundamental truth that Jesus is the Christ and the Son of God is being forsaken, with increasing numbers rejecting or redefining His divine nature, contributing to a broader cultural and spiritual decline. Paul's warning, echoed by Peter, urges vigilance against the slow peril of neglect, apathy, and small compromises that pave the way for larger defections. Without a steady walk with God and consistent practice of His Word, there is a danger of forsaking the understanding given to true believers. God does not call us to halt the world's falling away but to ensure we do not let things slip in our own lives, taking heed lest we be deceived or weighed down by the cares of this life, so that the day of Christ's return becomes a day of victory for us rather than condemnation.

The Duality of Prophecy
'Prophecy Watch' by Earl L. HennThe principle of duality in prophecy is crucial for understanding the falling away from the revealed truth of God. Many prophecies in the New Testament predicted a great apostasy that occurred in the church toward the end of the first century. These prophecies are dual in nature, with the falling away in the first century serving as a type of an end-time apostasy. Over recent decades, some of these prophecies have been evident within the modern church of God, demonstrating the principle of duality. More apostasy is expected as the return of Christ approaches. Therefore, constant vigilance is necessary to guard against being caught unawares by these spiritual challenges.
Do We Have 'Eternal Security'?
'Ready Answer' by Richard T. RitenbaughThe concept of falling away is a grave concern, as the Bible repeatedly warns that we can lose everything through sin. Our God is a God of justice, and if we live a life of sin, we will reap the punishment that those sins deserve. The idea of eternal security is foreign to Scripture, as it is clear that failure to keep God's law is sin, and those who sin will be judged by the law, facing the wages of sin, which is death. Jesus Himself declares that unless we repent, we will all likewise perish. To validate our calling and election, we must produce fruit and keep on growing. If we grow, our salvation is assured, for God is faithful and has promised us salvation if we are faithful. Jesus Christ earnestly desires to present us holy, blameless, and irreproachable to the Father in His Kingdom, but we must uphold our part of the covenant. We must continue in the faith, remain grounded and steadfast, keep on growing, and hold fast to the hope of our resurrection and eternal life. We must not take God's salvation for granted, but instead strive to make our calling and election sure by living in obedience to God's way of life.
