The Nature of God— What's Love Got To Do With It?

'Ready Answer' by Joseph B. Baity

Many faith-based charities reduce love to an emotional experience that is heightened in response to doing good works for the needy. Volunteers may continue their efforts to love their fellowman only if reciprocated with a strong sense of emotional well-being. Self-help movements teach that one must first learn to love oneself in order to give and accept love. These movements encourage individuals to let go of inhibitions and to put personal aspirations ahead of others. They reverse the outward direction of true love to an inward focus on being true to one's own self. This approach leads to the conclusion that love for self must take precedence over love for God.
