Why Should Christians Refuse Jury Duty?

'Ready Answer' by Staff

America's system of justice relies on juries to decide many civil and criminal cases. Citizens are summoned by the government to serve on juries, and after hearing all the evidence, they render a verdict of innocence or guilt. However, the system is deeply flawed, with jurors often harboring prejudices that lawyers exploit, and many lacking proper understanding of the law and their responsibilities. Verdicts in prominent cases frequently provoke strong disagreement, highlighting the absence of truly righteous judgment. When summoned for jury duty, the response should align with the principle of refraining from judgment, as judgment is reserved for God at His appointed time. Just as Jesus Christ refrained from judging the world until the proper time, so must the brethren of God's church abstain from rendering judgments on others until that designated moment. At present, the saints lack the authority or power to sit in judgment over others' lives. God has allowed worldly governments to hold jurisdiction for now, and the church must remain separate from such worldly affairs. Like soldiers in wartime or representatives of a heavenly government, involvement in the judgments of a foreign state is not the place of God's people. The focus must be on pursuing perfection in the sight of God during the time allotted to us.
