Spiritual Gifts, an Overview
CGG Weekly by Richard T. RitenbaughIn the early church, spiritual gifts were vital for its growth and mission, as initiated by Jesus Christ on Pentecost. Among these gifts, the gift of prophecy stands out as a significant endowment, enabling an individual to proclaim God's Word with authority and insight. As listed by the apostle Paul in Romans 12:6 and I Corinthians 12:10, 28-29, prophecy is a divine favor distributed by God's Spirit according to His will, empowering church members to serve His purpose. This gift, like others, manifests as a talent or ability to accomplish spiritual aims within the body of believers. God desires that such gifts, including prophecy, be identified and utilized to the fullest in service to Him and His people, ensuring that His message is effectively communicated and His work advanced.
A Survey of God's Gifts to Us
Sermon by Martin G. CollinsSpiritual gifts, as extraordinary endowments from God, are given to members of His church through the power of the Holy Spirit for the benefit of the whole body. These gifts, derived from the Greek word charismata, meaning grace, manifest visibly in a person's actions and mind, reflecting God's grace. According to His will, He distributes these gifts to edify and unify the church, as well as to convict and convert future members. Among these gifts, the gift of prophecy holds a significant place, primarily directed toward the church through preaching. Its main function is to convey divine revelation of immediate importance, addressing the church's needs under specific circumstances. Prophecy serves for edification, exhortation, and consolation, occasionally including authoritative declarations of God's will in special cases and, in rare instances, predictions of future events. Though it focuses more on preaching than foretelling, a true prophet must live close to God, understanding His mind and will to communicate them effectively. The prophet's role is twofold: to bring rebuke and warning when actions stray from God's will, and to offer advice and guidance to direct the church in the path God desires.
Gifted With Power From on High
Sermon by Martin G. CollinsThe gift of prophecy is primarily directed to the church in the way of preaching. Its primary function is to convey divine revelation of immediate significance to the church on what it needs to know and do in specific circumstances. This gift serves primarily for edification, exhortation, and consolation for the church. It includes occasional authoritative declarations of God's will regarding specific cases and, secondarily, very rare predictions of future events. The saints are to pursue love and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that they may prophesy, preach, and teach.
Love's Importance and Source
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughGod is the source of real love; mankind by nature does not have it. It is only by knowing God that we can have this love. Godly love is a cycle that God initiates.
