The Clear Light of a God-Given Life
Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by Mark SchindlerClaire Wineland lived with the constant awareness that death could come at any moment because of her incurable cystic fibrosis. She responded by founding Claire's Place Foundation to support families facing the same disease and by creating an online resource called C.F. University to help children understand their condition. She spoke publicly about refusing to view her pain as uniquely severe, instead treating every circumstance—suffering, loneliness, friendships, and health alike—as material to be used for the benefit of others. She urged listeners to stop postponing meaningful action until circumstances improved and instead to find courage in the present moment, declaring that one is never happy with what one receives unless one is first happy with what one already possesses. Her outlook connects directly to the life that belongs to those in whom the Spirit of God dwells. Because the Spirit gives life on account of righteousness, believers are debtors not to the flesh but to the Spirit that raised Christ from the dead. This life is therefore to be lived by putting to death the deeds of the body, persevering through present sufferings that are not worthy to be compared with the coming glory, and trusting that all things work together for good to those called according to God's purpose. Even when physical strength diminishes to the point that former service seems impossible, the same Spirit keeps the focus on Christ's promises and maintains the clear light of the Kingdom within the person. The pattern appears again in the woman who anointed Jesus with costly oil, giving what she had at the moment rather than waiting for a better day, and in John the Baptist, who continued to point others to Christ even while imprisoned and unable to continue his earlier work. Youth are therefore instructed to remember their Creator while strength remains, to walk in His ways, and to prepare to carry forward the same obedient service when those who have gone before can no longer do so. In every stage the life given by God is to be used without reservation, knowing that faithfulness in the present moment, whatever the limitation, fulfills the purpose for which that life was granted.
