Why Must Satan Be Released?

'Prophecy Watch' by David C. Grabbe

The release of Satan after the Millennium, as described in Revelation 20:7-9, marks a significant event in God's plan. After being bound for a thousand years to prevent deception of the nations, Satan is released to commit his final rebellion. This release serves multiple purposes under God's sovereign design. Firstly, it allows Satan to demonstrate his unchanging nature, as even after a millennium of confinement, he emerges to deceive and lead humanity into rebellion once more, disregarding the peace and prosperity under Christ's rule. Secondly, this release acts as a powerful lesson for humanity, illustrating that Satan's deceptive ways remain constant, providing a vivid testimony of his refusal to change despite knowing the disastrous end that awaits him. His actions, foretold in Scripture, are history written in advance, showing that even with advance knowledge of consequences, his nature drives him to oppose God. Thirdly, Satan's release serves as a test for the nations. After a thousand years of peace under Christ's governance, where no human has experienced Satan's influence, the nations face a choice. Those inclined to follow Satan's deceptions are separated from those who remain faithful to God, revealing the persistent flaw of human nature that aligns with Satan's self-centeredness. Finally, this event culminates in God's final judgment on Satan for his ceaseless opposition, as well as on the nations who choose to follow him. Though Satan instigates rebellion, the root issue lies in human nature's tendency to heed his destructive message, underscoring the need for a complete transformation to God's incorruptible nature to prevent any future defiance against the Eternal's creation.
