Conquering Temptation: Learn from Jesus Christ
'Ready Answer' by Pat HigginsJesus Christ's overcoming provides a powerful example for us to follow in our spiritual battles. In His temptation by satan in the wilderness, as recorded in Matthew 4:1-11, Mark 1:12-13, and Luke 4:1-13, He faced appeals to physical needs, pride, and worldly power. In each instance, He responded automatically and immediately with Scripture, demonstrating the importance of knowing and internalizing God's Word to combat temptation effectively. His example teaches us that Scripture must be so familiar that it naturally guides our reactions in any situation. Christ's victory over temptation was rooted in His mastery of every thought, aligning them with His Father's will, as seen in Hebrews 10:7. He brought every thought into captivity to the obedience of God, as emphasized in II Corinthians 10:5, showing that sin begins in the mind and must be conquered there. Throughout His life, He replaced wrong thoughts with God's right thoughts, using verses from the Bible to counter satan's attacks, a method that is simple to state but hard to practice. By examining His responses, we learn a practical strategy for our own battles. Christ had already won before satan appeared, because He consistently controlled His thoughts. To imitate Him, we must strive to take every thought captive, replacing negative thoughts like fear, worry, and anxiety with God's promises, such as those found in Isaiah 41:10, Matthew 6:33-34, and Philippians 4:6-7. This disciplined practice, akin to an athlete's training, involves memorizing Scripture and repeating it whenever a wrong thought arises, asking God for strength to make His ways instinctive. Christ's battle with satan reveals that conquering temptation is the fruit of a life spent mastering one's thoughts. By filling our minds with God's truth, as He did, we ensure that His thoughts become the foundation for our decisions and actions. His example challenges us to have God's Word living in us, guiding every step, so that we too can overcome and face life's challenges as He did.
Daily Overcoming
Sermonette by Bill OnisickIf we overcome, we will not be hurt by the second death, and our name will not be blotted out of the Book of Life. We will be clothed in white raiment, eat of the Tree of Life and hidden manna. If we overcome, we will be given a new name, and our name will be confessed before the Father and His angels. If we overcome, we will be given power over the nations, become a pillar in the temple of our God, and inherit all things as we sit with Jesus Christ on His throne. Overcoming is the all day, everyday victory of making the right selfless choices in the battle against our carnal nature that drives us contrary to God's will. It is a daily cleansing process, part of the sanctification that Jesus Christ works out in His church. The source of our victory in overcoming the world is our faith in Jesus Christ, through whom we become partakers of His divine nature. Jesus, the Son of God, has overcome the world, and through Him, we too can overcome. God, through His grace, has given us everything we need to overcome, and through His Spirit, we are fellow overcomers with Christ, escaping the corruption of carnality in this world. The incredible promises of Jesus Christ to the end-time church are given to the overcomers, who must awaken and make ready for the Bridegroom who will return soon. Overcomers are those making daily progress to identify and eradicate sin, purifying their minds in the constant pursuit of holiness, walking in His enabling Spirit of self-control and self-sacrificial love.
