Colossian Law-Keeping

Sermon; #1506; 70 minutes
Given 14-Sep-19

Description: (hide)

Nominal Christendom, following the lead of the Colossian and Laodicean congregations, cannot see God's law even though it is in plain sight, taught throughout the Old and New Testaments. By twisting the meaning of Paul's Epistle to the Colossians, the congregations of Colossae and Laodicea came to embrace the same fatally errant doctrines which are the hallmark of mainstream 'Christianity' (e.g., Eternal Security and "by faith alone"). The result is a no-works theology which results in complacency on the part of worshippers. Not recognizing the whole counsel of God, including His law, the Laodiceans and today's nominal 'Christians' are spiritually naked. In the first two chapters of Colossians, Paul emphasizes a high Christology in order to counter heresies denying Christ's primacy. In chapters three and four, the apostle emphasizes the whole counsel of God, alluding to all but one of the Ten Commandments. Protestants go hopelessly off the tracks misinterpreting Colossians 2:14, assuming Christ is doing away with the law when He is in reality tearing up our arrest warrant and death certificate, both the result of sin, the transgression of the law. Under the New Covenant, we are circumcised in our hearts, permitting us to keep God's Laws as part of our nature. In no way has Jesus nailed a jot or tittle of the law to the cross. Unlike the hapless Laodiceans in Revelation 3, we need to focus our attention on things above, refusing to compromise with worldliness.
