Do You Take Sin Seriously? God Does!
Sermon by Martin G. CollinsChildren are affected by the sins of their parents, as seen in the story of Achan. When Achan sinned by taking the accursed things, his entire family was held accountable and shared his fate. They were stoned and burned, demonstrating that a sin committed by one family member impacts the whole family. This principle extends to the church, where the sin of one member can affect the entire congregation.
The Commandments (Part Twelve)
Sermon/Bible Study by John W. RitenbaughParents need to teach their children to consider the long-range consequences of current behaviors, chastening and disciplining them while there is hope.
To the Third and Fourth Generation
Sermonette by Ronny H. GrahamWhen we yield to God, He no longer holds us accountable for the misdeeds of our ancestors. His mercy comes on those who love Him and keep His commandments.
Maintaining Good Health (Part 11)
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughThe effect of our choices does not stop with us. When we do not stop something like this in our lives, they will continue to reverberate beyond us, affecting others, and our children especially. How can we put into the mouth of our children the right things? How can we train them up in the way that they should go if we are setting the wrong example as parents before them? The laws of God cannot be avoided. They cannot be ignored. When we do not control ourselves to make the right choice, the consequences of our actions impact our children, just as the choices of Adam and Eve affected the whole world.
Childrearing (Part Six)
Sermon/Bible Study by John W. RitenbaughChildren are affected by their parents' sins because they often repeat the same mistakes and patterns of behavior that were modeled for them. The Bible indicates that if a child is not properly trained and disciplined, the habits, concepts, attitudes, and emotions that are etched into their minds from a young age can become almost impossible to change as they grow older. This is why parents have a responsibility to guide their children's trajectory early on, to prevent them from following the same destructive path that the parents may have taken due to their own sins and shortcomings. If parents do not take the opportunity to train their children in the right way, the children are likely to be condemned to repeating the same mistakes, as the apple does not fall far from the tree.
Acts (Part Fourteen)
Sermon/Bible Study by John W. RitenbaughA person of illegitimate birth shall not enter the congregation of the Lord. This phrase refers to not being free to hold a public office such as priest, elder, or judge. The law was given to encourage the nation to keep themselves physically pure and to inhibit the spread of sexually transmissible diseases by placing an impediment before people. If such an occurrence produces a child, that child is never going to get into a position of honor within the nation. Someone who comes from that sort of a background and gets into a position of honor or leadership is not generally good for the rest of the nation. Children of adultery and fornication tend to have psychological problems. They tend not to be as stable as those who come from a normal family life. They tend to bear grudges and are rebellious. They feel that the world is against them because all their life they have been battling uphill against a society that has been looking down upon them. When such a person gets into public office, he bears those same psychological scars with him, and they become a means of the wrong kind of leadership. The fathers commit a sin but the children bear the pain. That pain brings upon those children psychological scars which, if put into a position of leadership, are not good. The time is coming when the law in Deuteronomy 23:2 is not going to be in force. Everyone shall die for his own iniquity. Today God is building a spiritual house rather than a physical nation. For one to become a part of that spiritual house requires a change of heart and repentance. A person born of unfortunate circumstances now has an opportunity to have a position of leadership within God's house because of God's Spirit. A transformation has taken place in their heart that might enable them, if they work with God's Spirit, to get rid of the things that would normally encumber the carnal heart. Neither parent nor child is prevented from receiving eternal life and taking a position in God's house, in God's Family, in God's government. Because of the addition of God's Spirit, the repentance, the change of heart, the change of life, and the change of conduct, God wipes away the restriction and gives that person an opportunity to take his place in the congregation, in the Body. Our relationship with God depends on our own actions.
