Parable of the Unprofitable Servants
Bible Study by Martin G. CollinsIn Luke 17:7-10, the concept of servitude is illustrated through the Greek word *doulos* (G1401), meaning bondservant. During Christ's time, a *doulos* was under the complete authority of his master, reflecting the lowly position disciples must take to serve their Master well. As bondservants, we are not our own but belong to Christ, who bought us with His blood, and we must remain at His disposal, offering total effort at all times. Even after serving to the best of our ability, we remain unprofitable servants in comparison to Christ, for our service will always fall short of His suffering and sacrifice. There is no excess of earned credit in us; even perfect duty leaves us short before God. Christ expects every follower to perform their duty with a mind and will unified with His, embracing humility in service, often in ways that are humbling and obscure by worldly standards.

Entanglement with the Yoke of Bondage
Sermon by Martin G. CollinsThe Greek word *doulos* (G1401), translated as "servant" in the King James Version, carries the meaning of slave, bondman, or servant. As explained in John 8:34, Jesus declared that whoever commits sin is a slave of sin, emphasizing the bondage that sin imposes. Similarly, in II Peter 2:19, the apostle Paul referred to the ungodly as slaves of corruption, noting that a person is brought into bondage by whatever overcomes them. Sin acts as a merciless taskmaster, holding the rebellious in abject servitude. Through Jesus Christ, freedom from the slavery of sin is possible. By faith in Him, one can escape sin's grip, just as the ancient Israelites were led out of Egyptian bondage. However, this liberation transforms one into a slave of a different kind. As Paul wrote in Romans 6, according to Strong's Concordance, the term for servant means to enslave, literally or figuratively, indicating a state of bondage. Jesus frees us from sin to become slaves to righteousness. Having been bought with the price of His shed blood, Christians have no choice but to live righteous lives, yielding completely to the way He has set before us, as our lives are no longer our own. The yoke of slavery to sin is heavy, burdening those encumbered by it in a desolate wilderness. In contrast, slavery to Jesus Christ is a beneficent form of bondage. In Matthew 11, He declared that His yoke is easy and His burden is light. This perspective must be maintained, ensuring we do not drift back into the sin from which we were delivered, but instead serve with humility and obedience to our Masters, Jesus Christ and God the Father.

Moses, Servant of God
Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by John W. RitenbaughThe Greek word *doulos* (G1401), translated as servant or slave, carries a strong sense of being under subjection to another. Depending on the context, it can be correctly rendered as slave, indicating a person with no rights, whose will is entirely owed to someone else. A literal slave is not free to spend time and energy as they please. In contrast, a servant has more liberty, but the term *doulos* emphasizes complete submission. This concept places a significant responsibility on every Christian to be God's slave, acknowledging that our life belongs to another, having been bought with a price. Though our will remains, it must be under strong internal control to avoid disobedience to our Master. This requires meditation and discipline, highlighting the battlefield where our struggle is fought—between what God wants and what human nature considers its right. Essential to our faith is the belief that what God requires, He always enables, supplying His servants with the necessary tools, blessings, and gifts to carry out their assignments.
