The Christian Fight (Part Seven)
'Personal' from John W. RitenbaughThrough the calling and redemption by Jesus Christ, those who were slaves of this world become slaves of Jesus Christ. Their bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit and are not their own because they were bought at a price. Therefore they must glorify God in their body and in their spirit which are God's. From the Lord they receive the reward of the inheritance for they serve the Lord Christ. Their lives and time now belong to Jesus Christ.
The Christian and the World (Part Seven)
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughJesus Christ calls for complete dedication in serving Him as a slave. The Apostle Paul stated that for him to live is Christ, meaning his entire existence was bound up in totally devoted service to Jesus Christ. To serve Jesus Christ requires a quality of focus comparable to the dedication and discipline shown by those who reach the highest levels in their chosen fields. This service means enslaving oneself willingly to Jesus Christ through the use of free moral agency. The word translated serve in the instruction that no man can serve two masters does not mean an occasional act of obedience but rather to be a bond servant or slave constantly and entirely subject to the master's will. God wants His people to choose to serve Jesus Christ in the same way they formerly served sin. A person may serve two masters unequally by occasionally doing an act of service for one while habitually submitting to the other. Jesus Christ and the world as masters are diametrically opposed so that equal service to both is impossible. Serving Jesus Christ is the same as laying up treasures in heaven. The person who loves God shows it by placing himself and all that is his at God's disposal. This love involves the will along with the right treasure and understanding followed by the disciplined setting of the will to serve Jesus Christ as completely as possible. Jesus Christ requires the forsaking of all competing loyalties in order to take up the cross and follow Him. Paul counted all his former gains as loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Jesus Christ and suffered the loss of all things that he might win Christ. He renounced his earthly treasures to be found in Jesus Christ through faith. The abundant life comes from the relationship with Jesus Christ and following through in His commandments. Jesus Christ wants His people to choose to be His slave because it is good for them and for His purpose.
