What Is the Second Death?

The Bible teaches that man is a soul, not possessing an immortal one, and that the soul who sins will die. Scripture asserts that the wages of sin is death, a complete cessation of existence, not a mystical journey or a freeing of the soul. God alone has immortality, and man must seek it, as he does not inherently possess it. Death, as described in the Bible, includes the concept of a first death, which is the physical cessation of life. This first death does not satisfy the penalty for sin, as only a life taken in judgment for sin can pay that debt. Those who die physically enter a state of no thought or consciousness in the grave, awaiting a resurrection. Unless God resurrects someone by placing his spirit into another living body, that marks the end of their existence. The first death, experienced by all, contrasts with the potential for eternal life offered through Christ, highlighting the need for a resurrection to escape the condemnation of sin introduced at the beginning of mankind's history.
