Perspective Matters
Sermonette by Craig SablichMany religious people sincerely believe they are following scripture, but often they adhere to interpretations passed down through generations, which over time feel like unquestionable truth. Instead of asking what the Bible actually says, they rely on what they have always heard, reading God's word through the lens of tradition. Jesus warned against worshiping God while teaching the commandments of men, pointing out that even devout individuals might not be following scripture directly, but rather human doctrines. Colossians 2:8 cautions against being taken captive by philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition rather than Christ. This captivity can feel like certainty or faith, yet it remains dangerous, as it shifts the foundation away from God's truth to human interpretation. In the first century, some redefined faith in Christ, suggesting obedience was no longer binding and grace covered everything, blending God's truth with personal reasoning. This mixture obscured His truth, making it harder to recognize. Paul describes this as the mystery of lawlessness, a subtle shift within the church itself, where grace replaces obedience rather than leading to it, rendering obedience flexible or negotiable. John warns that sin is lawlessness, and claiming to know God without keeping His commandments indicates a discrepancy. This system of belief speaks the language of obedience, grace, and love, yet quietly moves away from covenant obedience to selective submission and personal interpretation. II John 1:9 states that anyone who goes beyond the teaching of Christ does not have God, emphasizing that adding to His teachings is not growth but departure. Jesus, in Revelation 2 and 3, praises the church of Ephesus for rejecting this system and warns others for tolerating it, urging repentance with a stern reminder of consequences. Paul foretells that this system will persist until Christ returns, indicating its ongoing relevance. The danger lies not in outright rejection of Christ, but in accepting a deceptive version that alters the understanding of following Him, often without noticing the shift. Only God's word, as the sole source of absolute truth, can guide us back to His perspective, ensuring we do not fall into the trap of human commandments and traditions.
