Angelic Responsibilities
Sermon/Bible Study by Martin G. CollinsThe rebellion of angels, led by Lucifer, marks a significant disruption in the divine order established by God. Initially created with perfection, wisdom, and beauty, Lucifer was an anointed cherub who covered the throne of God, as described in Ezekiel 28:11-16. He was perfect in his ways from the day of his creation until iniquity was found in him, leading to his casting out due to violence and sin. This rebellion is further detailed in Isaiah 14:12-14, where Lucifer, also called the son of the morning, sought to ascend into heaven, exalt his throne above the stars of God, and be like the Most High, resulting in his fall from grace. This act of defiance by Lucifer instigated a broader rebellion among the angels, with a third of them following him, as implied in the scriptural context. Their sin brought chaos to the earth, transforming it from an ordered creation into a state of waste and emptiness between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. This chaotic condition, described as "without form and void," resulted from their violation of God's laws, as supported by references in Jeremiah 4:23 and Isaiah 34:11, where similar terms denote confusion due to sin. The consequences of their rebellion are evident in II Peter 2:4, which states that God did not spare the angels who sinned, casting them down to hell and delivering them into chains of darkness to be reserved for judgment. This event occurred before the creation of man, indicating that a devil was already in existence by the time Adam was formed. Jude 6 further notes that these angels, who did not keep their proper domain and left their abode, are reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day. Currently, these fallen angels, under the leadership of satan, exert influence over the present world, as highlighted in Hebrews 2:5, which contrasts the world to come, not subject to angels, with the current state under their dominion. Their rule is characterized by deception and negative influence over the earth's inhabitants, portraying satan as the god of this world and the prince of the evil realm in which we live.
Do Angels Live Forever?
'Personal' from John W. RitenbaughHumanity shares Planet Earth with angels, some of whom are invisible, evil enemies that must be resisted to overcome sin. These rebellious angels, referred to as demons, remain a significant influence on human life. Created before Adam and Eve, these sinning angels continue to live on, despite their rebellion, with no record of any angel dying, even from the war that broke out due to their defiance. At least 6,000 years old, these demons persist, though their movements are restricted to the earth unless called before God. To some extent, they are free to deceive and harass mankind, with the penalty for their sins not yet fully carried out beyond a measure of constraint. These rebellious angels express fear of destruction, acknowledging a future day appointed for their torment, as they dread being destroyed by the spiritual power of Jesus Christ. Though their penalty appears at this point to be torment and restraint, with the knowledge of what they have lost, the scales of justice must balance, as the wages of sin not repented of is death. As living beings with the liberty to make moral choices, these angels are souls, subject to the same standard of judgment God applies to all. The costliest payment for sin, through Jesus Christ, aims to reconcile and heal the breach caused by sin, which destroys relationships and life itself. The sins of these angels contributed to the chaotic, lifeless state of the earth, and their king, satan, personifies sin as a destroyer and murderer from the beginning. In the New Heaven and New Earth, no unrighteousness in any form, including angelic sins, will exist. God is purging sin and unrepentant sinners, including defiled angels, whose sinful works will be burned up in the Lake of Fire. Scripture reveals a future of pure righteousness where even the memory of sin and sinners, including rebellious angels, will be erased, ensuring nothing mars the moral and spiritual environment of God's Kingdom.
