Unsheathe Your Sword! (Part One)
'Ready Answer' by Pat HigginsAs Christian soldiers, we must wield the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, as our active weapon in spiritual warfare. This sword, exemplified by Christ's immediate and perfect counterstrikes against satan's attacks, contains a comprehensive collection of offensive and defensive approaches to fight our carnal minds and hearts. With His mind filled with God's words, Christ responded instantly from that source, not from human nature, providing a model for us to follow. To effectively use this sword, we must identify the battleground, unsheathe it to find and apply the godly response, memorize verses to keep it sharp and ready, and decide to wield it with faith and courage. Wielding the sword clarifies our commitment to God's way, forcing us to choose and demonstrating to Him and ourselves where we stand. Even with the sword in hand, we must choose to deploy it, bringing it to mind despite the fear of what it will cost to slay the self in a life-and-death struggle where only one survives. Memorizing verses replaces our thoughts with Christ's, ensuring His words are the first to come to mind when making decisions. With Christ-guided choices, we avoid sin and the subsequent battles it creates. Courage is essential to unsheathe the sword, and God commands His soldiers to have it, assuring us of His presence and power to win the battle as we call on Him. As we pack our minds with memorized verses, they direct our steps in the right direction, helping us conquer our carnal nature and live with Him for eternity.
Living By the Sword
'Ready Answer' by David C. GrabbeJesus Christ's instruction to buy a sword in Luke 22:35-37 carries a deeper spiritual meaning beyond the physical act. While the immediate application fulfilled prophecy by marking the disciples as transgressors, the spiritual lesson is paramount. Christ's response to the disciples' mention of two swords, "It is enough," serves as a mild rebuke, closing the discussion rather than endorsing physical defense. His actions during His capture and trial further demonstrate that neither He nor His followers need to rely on weapons for protection, as God's plan governs all outcomes. In the spiritual realm, Paul in Ephesians 6:10 urges believers to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might, highlighting that our battles are spiritual. Among the spiritual armor described, the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, stands as our true weapon. This is the sword we must carry constantly and turn to for defense, rather than trusting in physical might or weapons. Christ's teachings emphasize staying above worldly conflict and trusting in God for protection, enduring persecution for righteousness' sake without resorting to violence, which is commendable before Him.
Unsheathe Your Sword! (Part Two)
'Ready Answer' by Pat HigginsThe sword of the Spirit is the word of God. Our weapon in spiritual war is the sword, the Word of God. This weapon is not physical but spiritual. God has provided this weapon. If used, God guarantees victory. Memorizing the Word of God is a powerful approach to internalizing the mind of Christ. Implanted verses allow immediate wielding of the sword to repel attack. Being filled with God's words prepared Christ for any attack. Memorization allows following that example. To arm with the power of Scripture, the sword, one must answer what battle to win. Search the Scriptures to find the sword to win that battle. A practical method to sharpen the sword is memorizing only a verse's essential portion. Christ used only the part of a verse necessary to thwart attack. Being precise increases effectiveness. Another way to sharpen the sword is illustrated by selecting a version more likely to resonate and evoke a profound emotional response. The more a verse moves a person, the more powerful the sword. An additional way to sharpen the sword replaces a word with one that brings more precise focus to the mind. Christ sharpened His sword using a variation that best responded to attack. Some situations require multiple attacks with the sword. For persistent challenges, visualization is beneficial. Through memorizing verses, thoughts of the old man are replaced with those of Christ. Memorization of verses can empower prayers. Memorizing verses can be part of the meditation process. It is time to unsheathe the sword.
