Watching Is Not Passive
CGG Weekly by John O. ReidJesus Christ emphasizes that beyond merely observing world events, each of us has a vital work to accomplish. In Luke 21:36, He instructs us to watch and pray always to be accounted worthy to escape the coming trials and to stand before the Son of Man. This watching is not just about staying informed, but about setting our minds on the correct course and ensuring we do not wander off it, avoiding distractions from fleshly pulls or anxiety over basic needs that dull our spiritual senses. Jesus urges us to remain alert, to go without sleep in a spiritual sense, working diligently to overcome and take on the very nature of God. In Luke 21:34, taking heed means to hold our mind toward the right destination, carefully guarding against spiritual regression. In Matthew 11:12, Jesus declares that the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force, indicating the intense struggle required to control our hearts and minds and to obey the spirit of the law. This effort to overcome and grow in character is a violent battle against our own flesh, as seen in the conflict between flesh and Spirit. Mark 13:32-33 reminds us that no one knows the day or hour of Christ's return, only the Father, and thus we must take heed, watch, and pray, remaining vigilant and attentive to spiritual matters. Jesus further instructs in Mark 13:34 that each of us has a specific work to do, a task to achieve what is expected of those called by God. His warning in Mark 13:35-37 is clear: we must watch, for we do not know when the master will return, lest He find us sleeping. This call to watch is for all, urging constant readiness and dedication to our spiritual growth and calling.
