Prayer must be selfless rather than selfish, for any attempt to use it merely to achieve personal objectives or satisfy private desires renders it ineffective and insincere. Such self-centered prayer reflects a narrow spirit that absorbs all care and attention in one's own interests, contrary to the requirement to esteem others better than oneself and to look out also for their welfare. Genuine prayer arises from the indwelling love of God that produces spontaneous, benevolent regard for the happiness of others without meddling or becoming busybodies. This outgoing concern breaks the hold of selfishness and aligns prayer with God's will, ensuring that requests benefit others and do not conflict with their needs. When the focus remains exclusively on personal matters, the broader purpose of prayer is lost, for God is forming a unified Family in which every member intercedes for the rest. Those who remain self-absorbed and unwilling to pray for family members or fellow believers demonstrate that they have not yet developed the character needed for eternal life in that Family. Effective prayer therefore requires shifting attention outward so that intercession becomes a natural expression of love, allowing God to hear and answer according to His perfect wisdom.
