The Burden of Sin

Sermon by Charles Whitaker

Sin is a heavy burden, akin to a chain that weighs us down, hobbling and restraining us as part of our very nature. It is something we cannot shed by ourselves; the people of this world live with it and die from it, unable to do anything about it through their own efforts. Many become callous to it or deny its existence, yet it remains ever-present. The Scriptures establish that sin is indeed a burden, an impediment that hampers our forward movement, a weight that clings to us. The notion propagated by some that we should come forward to lay our sins on Christ's shoulders at the cross is a profound misunderstanding. Christ Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, actively taking them upon Himself. He initiated and completed the carrying away of our sins, as the Author and Finisher of our salvation. His act of bearing sins is a spiritual matter, not a physical carrying away, but a profound removal from God's sight, so that God forgets them. This is not something we can do by dumping our sins on Him; rather, Christ voluntarily took them to Himself. Scriptures consistently show Christ's active role in removing our sins. He gave Himself to redeem us from lawlessness, and no one placed anything on Him; He willingly offered His life. We are powerless to remove the heavy chain of sin that burdens us; it is fast connected to us, and we could not unfasten or lift it to place on Christ's shoulder. While we were yet sinners, Christ lifted this heavy chain from us, taking it upon Himself in an active display of His love. To suggest that we can place our sins on Him is not only errant but arrogantly presumptuous. Christ's work on the cross is finished, once and for all, and He now intercedes for His people at His Father's side in heaven.
