The intensity of the training within all the world's military's special forces has one thing in common—the emphasis is only 10% physical but 90% mental, when all has broken down except for one's thoughts and will, which must countermand intense pain and agony. The secret is the cultivation of self-control, with the obsession that quitting is never an option. Self-discipline and self-control are built just like a physical muscle, continually exercised on a daily regimen. The intensity of the training we receive exceeds the rigor of any military special forces, requiring a lifelong commitment of mental and physical trials, made more precarious by the continuous surprise attacks, appealing to the carnal pulls of human nature. Deep within our nervous systems is an intense hatred of anything controlling us. Paul admonishes each of us to stir up the gift of God's Holy Spirit, fanning the flames of embers not unlike a blacksmith using bellows to intensify the heat. God's Spirit, when daily exercised, produces a strong and resilient mind, able to deflect the attacks from the arch-deceiver by continuous prayer, Bible-study, and meditation, assiduously avoiding negative impulses, but to also amplify agape positive impulses, seeking opportunities to do good works of service to others. When we stop our efforts using these "spiritual bellows" the fire starts to go out as we begin to quench the spirit. The receipt of God's Spirit requires our intense cooperation and our effort. Like a muscle, it must be continually flexed and developed to overcome Satan's surprise attacks in our minds which are, without discipline, hostile to God's laws. The core of effective discipleship is discipline by the Spirit of God.
