Sermonette: You Shall Surely Die

Scripture presents two opposing claims about death: God's warning, "You shall surely die," and Satan's deception, "You shall not surely die." The belief that humans are inherently immortal and consciously live after death has influenced many cultures and Christian teachings, yet Scripture consistently teaches that the dead are truly dead and await resurrection. Jesus compared death to sleep, Solomon said the dead know nothing, and Paul taught that immortality is God's gift. Jesus alone is said to have ascended to heaven, while death remains "the last enemy" to be destroyed. Thus, the Christian hope is not escape from death but resurrection: God will call the dead from their graves and restore life through Christ. This truth also calls us to test dreams, visions, and experiences by Scripture rather than tradition. Ultimately, Satan's lie obscures the glorious hope God offers—resurrection and eternal life through Christ.
