The Proof of the Bible

Herbert W. Armstrong Booklet

The authority of the Bible is underscored by the pronouncements of One who claims to be God, speaking with absolute certainty about the fate of the great city of Tyre. This One declares, "I am God, I have spoken it," asserting that many nations would come against Tyre like waves of the sea, one after the other, to destroy its walls, break down its towers, and demolish its buildings. He foretells that the stones, timbers, and even the top soil of Tyre would be scraped into the Mediterranean Sea, reducing the city to the top of a rock, a place to spread nets, and a spoil to many nations. This authority is further evidenced in specific prophecies, as God Eternal is quoted speaking directly, declaring that He would bring Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, against Tyre with horses, chariots, horsemen, and vast armies to slay its people, break down its towers, and tread down its streets. Yet, it is not just one nation, as God specifies that many nations would follow, each contributing to the city's destruction. The fulfillment of these prophecies reinforces the Bible's authority, as Nebuchadnezzar besieged Tyre for 13 years, demolishing the mainland portion as foretold. Later, after 250 years, Alexander the Great came, demolished the remains of Old Tyre, and used the debris to build a causeway to the island portion, turning it into a peninsula and capturing the city after a seven-month siege. These events, unfolding over centuries as predicted, challenge any notion of mere human conjecture, highlighting the power of the One who speaks through the Bible to pronounce and bring to pass judgments on nations and cities.

The Bible—Superstition or Authority?

Herbert W. Armstrong Booklet

The Eternal reveals Himself through the Bible as a Sovereign, All-Powerful, Governing God who is to be obeyed. The Bible's authority is evident in its clear depiction of kingdoms and governments that bear rule over people on earth, as shown through the prophet Daniel's interpretations of world-ruling empires. These prophecies, spanning from the Chaldean Empire to the future revival of the Roman Empire, demonstrate God's foreknowledge and control over history, affirming the Bible's authenticity. Furthermore, the present-day fulfillment of Jesus Christ's prophecy in Matthew 24:14, where the gospel of the kingdom is preached worldwide, serves as proof of the Bible's authority, signaling the nearness of the end of this age.

Trusting the Bible

Sermonette by Craig Sablich

The authority of the Bible is a critical subject for those seeking to understand and trust its teachings. Many question how they can rely on an ancient book, written thousands of years ago, to guide their lives. They wonder how the authors could know events from the beginning of time or if an invisible spirit truly inspired their words, especially given the numerous versions and potential errors over centuries. Historical evidence supports the Bible's accuracy. The Old Testament was preserved from about 50 BC to 100 AD, with meticulous copying methods, such as counting words and letters to ensure precision. The Dead Sea Scrolls, dating to the first century BC, confirm that the text remains unchanged for over 2,000 years. Similarly, the New Testament's reliability is backed by over 4,500 Greek manuscripts, showing 95% accuracy to the originals used in the King James Bible. Regarding completeness, the Jewish preservation of the Old Testament rejected the Apocrypha as inspired by God's Holy Spirit, a decision made long before other religious versions emerged. The New Testament writings, as hinted in Isaiah 8:16, were bound and circulated among early churches, with most agreeing on the canon by 170 AD, well before later compilations. Some claim the Bible is hard to read and contradictory, but God inspired it to be written in a style that may seem riddled with discrepancies to challenge readers. As Isaiah 55:8-9 states, His thoughts and ways are higher than ours, designed to reveal truth only to those who study with honesty and a willingness to live by His Word, not to disprove it. Scientific knowledge in the Bible, revealed thousands of years before human discovery, further validates its authority. Job 26:7 describes the earth hanging on nothing, Isaiah 40:22 speaks of its circular shape, and Leviticus 17:11 notes that life is in the blood, a fact science confirmed only centuries later. Prophecy uniquely establishes the Bible's credibility, with no other book containing such precise predictions. Isaiah 41:21-24 challenges false gods to predict the future, a test only God meets, as seen in fulfilled prophecies about world empires, the Messiah, and historical figures like Cyrus the Great, demonstrating His power and authority. Despite confusion from various religious texts claiming divine origin, the Bible stands out when tested for accuracy, completeness, scientific and historical evidence, and prophecy. Faith, a gift from God, is essential to trusting the Bible, requiring diligent study to uncover its truth as He intended. The foundation of belief rests in the authority of God's written Word, which contains the way of life worth sacrificing for. Believers must be prepared to explain, with clarity and compassion, why they trust the Bible as the Creator's message, always ready to defend the hope within them, as encouraged in I Peter 3:15.
