God is bound to do right because He is ruler and judge of all creation. Abraham appealed to this necessity when he pleaded for Sodom: "Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?" Where sin is concerned, doing right means judgment, and that judgment must finally end in the destruction of those who have not repented. God hates sin because of His holiness, so He cannot look with indifference on the unrighteous. Yet out of love He elected a great multitude to salvation. He could not save the guilty without violating His own nature, so another had to suffer the judgment in their place. Only His own Son, both able and willing, could do this. Christ's death therefore satisfies the demands of justice and also opens the way for mercy, so that God is just and the justifier of those who have faith in Jesus. Doing right is also required of those God calls. A calling puts an obligation on His children, and following Christ is personal and costly, demanding that we abandon and overcome sin, our past, and our own plans. Faith does not end the need for good conduct; everything we do matters. Like Paul, we must ask what work Christ wants from us, then finish that work as He finished His, and keep the faith to the end.
