Time for Self-Evaluation

'Ready Answer' by John O. Reid

Many individuals grapple with feelings of worthlessness, often stemming from painful backgrounds or past experiences. Some have endured molestation, leading to a deep sense of being worthless. Others have been told from childhood that they are useless, fostering a low self-opinion. Harsh self-judgment arises from looking at past mistakes, causing some to feel unworthy to participate in the Passover. These feelings make accurate self-examination challenging, as individuals may struggle to see how anyone, especially God, could value them. Despite these struggles, God desires an honest evaluation of one's current state during this season, encouraging a positive approach to recognize and address flaws. He offers forgiveness and understanding, knowing human limitations, and seeks to support those who earnestly examine themselves before Passover.

Psalm Genres (Part Six): Penitential Psalms

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

In the account of Jesus calling His disciples, Peter's response to the miracle highlights feelings of worthlessness. He felt totally unworthy and dirty due to his sinfulness. This stirred a feeling of worthlessness that he disliked intensely. He wanted Jesus to leave him so he could return to normal feelings of self-worth, thinking of himself as an okay guy. Standing next to Jesus, he realized he was not an okay guy but was full of sin, feeling it deeply. Like Peter, people recognize themselves as sinners in need of redemption and forgiveness. They are often full of doubt and unbelief. This is especially so when they are being called, as they see the grime of their lives, how awful they are, how they have been to people, and how they have treated God, their very Creator.

We have been base and ignoble, but Christ has enabled us to be cleaned up and transformed or shaped into offspring of God to be joint heirs with Christ.
