Jesus Christ exemplified this standard through His earnest desire to share the final Passover before His suffering, knowing from before the foundation of the world the full scope of the plan that would bring many into fellowship with the Father. He saw the entire sweep of time and prepared to give everything required to secure that result. Peter and Paul illustrate the same process of development. Both initially lacked humility and proper valuation, pursuing their own zeal instead of God's purposes, yet God allowed trials that refined them over years, revealing His foreknowledge and grace at work from their earliest days. Through these experiences they came to view events from the eternal perspective, adding virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love to their faith so that they would never stumble. God therefore regards the firstfruits as a unique investment worth His continuous time, energy, and intercession. He permits sifting to remove chaff while strengthening the wheat, always directing the process toward holiness in every aspect of conduct. Those who respond with matching humility and wholehearted effort become partners capable of protecting and advancing that investment until it reaches fulfillment in the Kingdom.
