Confidence in the Flesh Versus Faith

Sermon by Martin G. Collins

Confidence in the flesh hinders faith by promoting reliance on human effort and righteousness, which falls short of God's standards. This misplaced trust is evident when individuals prioritize their own achievements or inherited advantages over the righteousness that comes from God through faith in Jesus Christ. Such confidence leads to spiritual failure, as human goodness, even at its best, is polluted by sin and cannot satisfy God's perfect requirements. The apostle Paul, in Philippians 3, illustrates this by recounting his own past, where he once valued his Jewish heritage, adherence to the law as a Pharisee, and zealous persecution of the church as assets. However, upon encountering Christ, he recognized these as liabilities, counting them as loss to gain the true righteousness found in Christ alone. This rejection of human righteousness underscores the necessity of abandoning confidence in the flesh to embrace the righteousness that God offers, which is untainted by sin and sufficient for salvation. The challenge for members of God's church is to see the world's repeated failures and foolishness as a contrast that strengthens confidence in God's Word, building faith rather than hindering it through reliance on human standards.
