Why Is Christ, the Son, Called 'the Everlasting Father' (Isaiah 9:6)?

Bible Questions & Answers

Isaiah 9:6-7 prophesies about Jesus Christ, stating that He will be called Everlasting Father among other titles. This prophecy indicates that Jesus Christ, as the Son of God, will fulfill the role of Everlasting Father. The God of the Old Testament, identified as Jesus Christ, fulfilled the role of Father to Israel on three bases: He redeemed them from slavery in Egypt, He created them, and He founded them as a nation. In Jeremiah 31:9, Jesus Christ speaks of a future time when He will lead Israel as their Father, establishing a special relationship that will last eternally. Thus, Jesus Christ is the Everlasting Father as prophesied.

Christ Our Rock

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Jesus Christ is identified as The Rock, a symbol of immense power and steadfastness, reflecting His role as a foundational figure in both the Old and New Testaments. In Deuteronomy 32:18, He is portrayed as the Rock who begot Israel, reminding us of His role as Creator and Father to the Israelites. This imagery underscores His complete involvement in their creation, acting as both Father and Mother, with no collaborator or foreign god aiding Him in the process. As the Rock from which they were hewn, as mentioned in Isaiah 51:1, He is the ultimate source of their origin, beyond even Abraham, emphasizing His foundational role in their existence. Furthermore, in I Corinthians 10:1-4, the Apostle Paul draws on the imagery of the Spiritual Rock that followed Israel through the wilderness, explicitly stating that this Rock was Christ, the same God of the Old Testament who supplied them with sustenance and led them to the promised land. This continuity highlights that Jesus Christ, as The Rock, remains the same yesterday, today, and forever, embodying the same character and power across time.
