Hebrews (Part Nine): Chapter 1: Jesus' Exultation and Christianity's Claims

Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)

Jesus Christ, as the Anointed One, is central to God's proclamation in Psalm 2, where He is twice called His Son, and also identified as the Messiah. This declaration is made to only one person in all of mankind's history, Jesus of Nazareth, the only begotten Son of God, who is in the bosom of the Father and has declared Him. The linkage between Psalm 2 and the New Testament reveals that this proclamation was literally assigned by God the Father at the moment of Jesus' birth through the virgin Mary, marking the beginning of His human life and ministry of 33 and one-half years. As the Anointed One, Jesus holds the threefold offices of Prophet, Priest, and King simultaneously. In Hebrews 1, He is described as the Son through whom God spoke prophetically, as the High Priest who provided purification of sins, and as ruling from His throne in the Kingdom with kingly authority. God placed Him in these offices because He loves righteousness and hates lawlessness, anointing Him with the oil of gladness above all others, as stated in Hebrews 1:9. His sinless life proved His qualifications to lead, making Him the sole link to salvation for all eternity. Jesus, as the Anointed One, did not need to qualify for the office of High Priest in the ordinary sense, for He was already God at the time of the prophecy and even as He was conceived in Mary's womb, becoming both human and divine. At the moment of His birth, He was exalted to a position He had not literally held before, serving as the New Covenant High Priest throughout His ministry. God put His own Son on the job, just as He was already the King and the payment for sins, fulfilling this role in a legal and orderly manner.
