Will Christ Find Faith?
'Ready Answer' by John O. ReidJesus Christ, in Luke 18:1-8, shares the Parable of the Persistent Widow to encourage us to pray and not lose heart. He teaches that we must continue to pray and not become dejected if our prayers seem unanswered immediately. We are to understand that God may be testing us, teaching patience, or working out a purpose beyond our sight, always on His timetable, ensuring what is best for us. Our role is to persevere in faith, trusting Him in all we ask. Jesus contrasts God's loving faithfulness with the unjust judge's indifference, showing that if even a callous judge eventually responds to persistent pleas, how much more will God, who loves His chosen people, answer our cries under trial or in need. He assures us that God will avenge His elect, bearing long with their oppressors but acting suddenly to deliver His people when the time is right. Yet, Jesus questions whether, at His return, He will find true faith on earth, urging us to maintain a living faith that trusts Him completely and endures despite worldly pressures.
Parable of the Persistent Widow
Bible Study by Martin G. CollinsPeople must resist the human tendency of growing weary in prayer as a duty of the elect of God. Not losing heart means refusing to grow weary, give in to evil, or turn coward. Several major causes lead to losing heart in prayer. The defilement of sin kills interest in spiritual exercises like prayer and stops a good prayer life. Praying with doubt proves faithless and makes the prayer useless because unbelief hinders prayer. Prayer must sometimes occur at dangerous times when danger weeds out the coward from the courageous. Satan causes distractions especially during prayer time when the mind wanders. Few things cause loss of heart in praying more than delays in answers to requests. Jesus uses the parable to teach perseverance in praying to God even though answers often appear to take a long time. The exhortation on the Christian duty to pray includes dedication in prayer and resistance to the temptation to discontinue prayer. Prayer remains a matter of faith.
