The commandments of men, as burdensome decrees, were additions by religious leaders to what God revealed in the Old Testament. These human ordinances fostered prejudice, animosity, suspicion, and separation between Jews and Gentiles who were being called into God's church, acting as a middle wall of division. Jesus abolished this barrier through His supreme sacrifice, for He Himself is our peace. Christ did away with these Talmudic traditions, which were yokes of bondage, as necessary for salvation. However, He did not abolish any part of God's law, but made it possible for both Jew and Gentile to become spiritual Israelites, living together in freedom within His perfect law.

People can sincerely worship God while following teachings that originate not from Scripture but from accumulated human perspectives and traditions that gradually acquire the force of unquestionable authority. Over time, what begins as cultural or inherited interpretation stops being tested against God's Word and instead becomes the lens through which Scripture itself is read, so that obedience is redefined according to selective human standards rather than the commands God has plainly revealed. Jesus identified this pattern when He described religious people who worship Him yet teach as doctrine the commandments of men, presenting their practices as faithful when they no longer rest directly on divine instruction. The same shift appears in warnings against being taken captive by philosophy and empty deceit according to the tradition of men rather than according to Christ, showing how such systems can feel like certainty and devotion while displacing covenant obedience. This process does not require open rejection of Christ; it occurs when grace and faith are reframed so that obedience becomes optional or negotiable, producing a form of lawlessness that still uses biblical language and claims spiritual depth. The result is a mystery of lawlessness already at work, a hidden departure in which multiple perspectives are welcomed as enlightened yet the foundation quietly moves from God's revealed will to human interpretation. Jesus addresses this danger inside the churches, praising rejection of the system while warning that tolerating it requires repentance or confrontation by the sword of His mouth. Only continual return to the written Word allows God's perspective to correct every other viewpoint, because inherited traditions and personal reasoning cannot serve as the lamp that lights the true path.
