Jesus Christ, as the firstborn of both His heavenly Father and His physical mother, Mary, holds a unique position in the context of God's laws regarding the firstborn. On His eighth day of life, He was circumcised and dedicated to God's service as a firstborn, signifying His special status before God. The symbolism of the firstborn extends to the people of God's church today, representing them as God's special New Testament firstborn children. As described in Hebrews 12:23, we are part of the assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, occupying a precious position before God. He views us with the potential of what we can become, and our responsibility as regenerated children of God is to remain true and dedicated in lifelong service to Him as members of this church of the firstborn.

Christ is called the firstborn from the dead, which shows that others will likewise rise from the dead. He is the Forerunner and Captain who went before believers and blazed the trail (Hebrews 2:10). The last enemy, death, will not be overcome until everything else has been overcome, and that does not happen until the resurrection. Believers' victory over death is possible only because Christ went first. The Most High provides the life, death, and resurrection of His Son as a blessing so that Christians can follow in His footsteps and deliver the great enemy, death, into their hands. This ties to the Passover, where Christ the Lamb is the means of deliverance God supplies, and Passover is a blessing given so that believers may be victorious.
