Article by Charles WhitakerThe Babylonian Empire, under Nebuchadnezzar, stood as the sole superpower over the Middle East, its sun rising while Rome was still sleepy-eyed and London slumbered. It is the instrument of Judah's fall, one of the axial times when nations perish only to be transmuted and reincarnated elsewhere, usually westward. God charged Jeremiah with throwing down the Davidic monarchy from Palestine and replanting it in the West. Zedekiah ruled as Nebuchadnezzar's rebellious vassal, the last king of the independent line of Pharez. During the siege of Jerusalem, Jeremiah told him that surrendering to the Babylonian princes would preserve his life, his house, and the city from fire. God had not yet irrevocably decided the evil He would create for His people. The Babylonians briefly lifted the siege when an Egyptian army that Judah had hired approached, but Jeremiah said they would return and Jerusalem would fall. Zedekiah, too afraid of Judah's princes to obey, did not surrender. As Jeremiah predicted, the Babylonians renewed the siege, and eighteen months later the city burned in July. They captured the fleeing Zedekiah and took him to Nebuchadnezzar's headquarters at Riblah, where his sons were killed before him. They then blinded and bound him and carried him to Babylon, where he remained until his death.
