Did the Thief on the Cross Go to Heaven with Jesus Christ (Luke 23:43)?

Bible Questions & Answers

Jesus Christ, in His crucifixion, spoke to a repentant malefactor, assuring him of a future in Paradise with the words, "Verily I say unto thee today, shalt thou be with Me in Paradise." This promise, however, did not imply an immediate entry into Paradise on the day of the crucifixion, as Jesus Himself was buried and remained in the grave for three days, as evidenced by His burial in a new sepulchre in a garden near the place of crucifixion. Since Jesus did not enter Paradise on that day, neither did the malefactor, for Christ holds preeminence in all things and would not be preceded by another. The location of Paradise is identified as being in the presence of God's throne, associated with the New Jerusalem, which contains the tree of life and is yet to be fully prepared and descend to earth after the Millennium. Thus, the repentant malefactor has not yet entered Paradise, as Jesus is still preparing a place for His followers. The malefactor, crucified alongside Jesus, remains dead and buried, awaiting the time of resurrection when he will eventually enter the promised Paradise of God with Christ.

The Last Words of Jesus Christ

Sermon by Martin G. Collins

During the crucifixion of Jesus Christ at Calvary, two criminals were condemned to die alongside Him, one on His left and one on His right, within hearing range of His words. Both were likely thieves or murderers, deserving of their death sentences according to the laws of the time. Initially, both criminals joined others in reviling Jesus, but as the morning progressed, a remarkable change occurred in one of them. This criminal began to believe that Jesus was the Savior, moved perhaps by Jesus' own example during their shared ordeal. Luke records the unrepentant thief's words, showing his desire only to escape pain without faith or personal change, to which Jesus did not respond. However, to the repentant thief, Jesus spoke words of encouragement, giving him hope for the future. Jesus assured him of life after death, demonstrating His confidence in the Father's promises and offering eternal life in God's Kingdom to those who believe in Him as Lord and Savior and change their lives accordingly. This interaction highlights the contrast between rejection and acceptance of Jesus Christ, showing that while most may reject Him and His way of love, those who repent and surrender receive lasting hope and strength to face their present circumstances.

Final Words of Jesus on the Cross

Sermon by Clyde Finklea

When Jesus Christ was crucified, He was nailed to the cross between two thieves at the third hour, which is 9:00 AM, the time of the morning sacrifice. These two robbers, positioned one on His right and one on His left, endured the same cruel fate alongside Him. While suffering horribly at the hands of men who mocked and abused Him, Jesus demonstrated His boundless love and intercession. In His second statement from the cross, recorded in Luke 23, He intervened for one of the robbers who turned to Him in faith at that moment, promising eternal life and fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah 53:12 that He bore the sins of many and made intercession for the transgressors. This act of mercy, even amidst His own agony, revealed His focus on others rather than Himself, showcasing His perfect character of love during those daylight hours from 9:00 AM to noon.
