Christ's Death, Resurrection, and Ascension
Sermon by Richard T. RitenbaughIn the account of the Passover, as detailed in Exodus 12, the blood of the lamb was placed on the lintel and doorposts as a sign for the death angel to pass over the houses of the Israelites. This act ensured that the firstborn within those homes were spared from the tenth plague, the death of the firstborn. The blood of the lamb redeemed them, buying back their lives from destruction. Similarly, Jesus Christ's death mirrors this act of redemption. His blood, shed in a ghastly and terrible scourging, bought us back and redeemed us from the second death, akin to the protection from the death angel. As the Firstborn among many brethren, He protects us, the firstfruits of spiritual Israel, from that same fate. By accepting Him as our Savior, His sinless blood covers our sins, freeing us from our appointment with the death angel and granting us the hope of eternal life.
