Our Divine Destiny
Sermon by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)Our divine destiny is a profound and central theme in understanding God's purpose for humanity. Destiny, meaning the place where one stands fast, signifies the fixed position from which one does not move, akin to God's rest as described in Hebrews 4. After life's pilgrimage, filled with travails and uncertainties, we reach the appointed place in the Kingdom of God, where we stand firm in our designated role within God's purpose. This divine destiny is not fully revealed to us at this time, as only God and Jesus Christ know the exact positions each of us will hold. The Bible uniquely answers the universal question of why we were born, revealing our destiny through scattered teachings that require divine revelation to fully comprehend. God has hidden this mystery from billions, choosing to reveal His secret purpose only to those He calls. This revelation, kept secret since the world began, is a personal and individual gift from God, placing the called in a distinct spiritual category. Through this calling, God opens minds to understand His plan, aligning lives toward His purpose. Our destiny involves being created in God's image, after the God kind, distinct from all other creations. Man, modeled in the same form and shape as God, is not yet of the same substance but is equipped with a mind to reason, make choices, and develop toward becoming like Him. This process of refinement, beginning in the Garden of Eden, hints at the potential for transformation into a closer likeness to God. As offspring of God, all humanity is descended from Him, yet some are being developed further along the path to fully realize this divine destiny.
Our Awesome Destiny
Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by John W. RitenbaughOur ultimate destiny is not the Millennium, but the Kingdom of God, a purpose so vast that the Millennium is but a fleeting moment compared to the everlasting future. This destiny, central to God's purpose, demands our deep commitment, as its importance cannot be overestimated. In our calling, we have been granted knowledge of such awesome value, a rare and precious jewel among humanity, revealing the mystery of God's plan. This mystery, often misunderstood or unseen by many, shows that God is reproducing Himself, creating a family with character like His own, a purpose that goes beyond the wildest dreams of most. God has placed in human hearts a yearning for eternity, a desire to live forever, yet many remain blind to the direction and purpose of life. We, however, understand that our lives are purposeful, not wandering, as we follow the course God has laid out with zeal and commitment. He has revealed to us the two great alternatives in life, commanding us to choose. This divine purpose, hidden from the carnal mind, is a gift given by God's will, not by our own merit, to prepare us for the next stage of His great plan. We are not the product of blind chance, but of a purposeful creation guided from the beginning by God. Mankind is created and being further created into the very image of the God-kind, not as animals, but with dominion over the physical creation and a promise of greater dominion in the future. This destiny involves being formed into the image of God's Son, a process of spiritual regeneration through His Spirit, enabling us to think and act like Him if we believe and yield to His governance. God established models like the family and the command to dress and keep the earth, preparing mankind for this ultimate destiny through foundational character development and social relationships. These principles, meant to be believed and valued, guide us in building, not destroying, as we are shaped by His creative efforts. Jesus Christ came to reveal this destiny, dying for our sins so we could be in the Kingdom of God as sons of God, an extension of the dominion first given to mankind. As heirs of God, we are promised an inheritance alongside Jesus Christ, confirmed through Him and extended to all of Abraham's children. This inheritance, encompassing the earth and ultimately the universe, requires everlasting life to be fully realized, fulfilling God's plan for us to glorify Him as one body. We must trust Him, as Abraham did, adding up His promises and character, believing in His power to fulfill His purpose, so we may inherit all that lies before us with faith and commitment.
