The Harvesting of the Firstfruits
'Prophecy Watch' by Bill KeeseeThe Feast of Pentecost, known as the Feast of Harvest in the Old Testament, marks the culmination of a grain harvest that starts with the Feast of Firstfruits, the day of the wavesheaf, when the initial barley harvest is offered before the Lord. This spring grain harvest, often called the early harvest, contrasts with the later fall harvest of fruits and vegetables. Jesus Christ, in John 4:35, indicates the readiness of this harvest, stating that the fields are already white for harvest, referring to the transitional color of grain between immature green and fully ripe golden brown. At this white stage, reapers cut the standing grain with sharp sickles, ensuring it is mature enough to be harvested but not so ripe as to fall from the husk. After cutting, the grain is gathered into sheaves, tied into bundles, and stood upright in shocks to dry and mature, protected from ground moisture while air circulates through them. These shocks remain in the field for many days until ready for threshing, when the grain is separated from the husks on the threshing floor. The final step, winnowing, cleans the grain of chaff by tossing it into the air on a breezy day, leaving only usable grain. Christ, as the Reaper in Revelation 14:14-16, is depicted with a sharp sickle, ready to reap the harvest of the earth when it is ripe, signifying the gathering of His firstfruits. This harvest process, beginning when the grain is white, reflects an ongoing readiness and careful timing to ensure no grain is lost, mirroring the meticulous care in the spiritual gathering of God's children.
