Basic Doctrines: The Second Resurrection
Bible Study by Martin G. CollinsThe Bible reveals that not all the dead will be resurrected at the same time. While truly faithful Christians will be raised to immortality at Jesus Christ's second coming, there is also a resurrection of condemnation or judgment for the unjust. This resurrection does not occur simultaneously with the first; God has an orderly plan, resurrecting different groups at different times, each in their own order. The rest of the dead, who have not understood God's way of life, must wait in their graves until the thousand years are over. This resurrection of judgment, as Christ describes, means that in a future time, God will raise many from their graves to learn the truth and have their opportunity to walk in it. Based on how they live during this period, God will decide their fates. Most He will save, but some, in stubborn rebellion against Him, will condemn themselves to eternal death. This judgment is not merely to cast the unjust into destruction, for God desires all to come to the knowledge of the truth and to true repentance at the proper time. Furthermore, this resurrection of the uncalled, often referred to as the second resurrection, will occur during the Great White Throne Judgment after the Millennium. During this time, those raised to physical existence will be judged according to their works. The books of the Bible will be opened to reveal true knowledge and understanding, and the Book of Life will be available so their names can be written in it upon repentance and acceptance of Christ as personal Savior. God, in His mercy and wisdom, has determined this to be the best way to bring the most to eternal life in His Kingdom.
