Deceptions of the End Time

'Prophecy Watch' by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Human nature is profoundly self-deceptive, with hearts so deceitful and desperately wicked that they often refuse to acknowledge their own capacity for deception. In today's world, deceit is rampant, with many believing lying is acceptable if it causes no harm and promotes a good cause, though such conditions are often illusory. Surveys reveal a rising tide of dishonesty in both public and private spheres, from falsified tax forms to games that reward deception. The prevalence of lying is evident in everyday mottos that question the reliability of information, suggesting trust in only a fraction of what is read. Deception marks the end time, as Jesus warned His disciples to beware of being deceived, predicting that many false prophets would arise and mislead many. Religious deception is particularly emphasized, with falsehoods preached in Jesus' name across various faiths, affecting billions worldwide. Beyond religion, secular dishonesty pervades society, rooted in the original lie told to Eve by Satan. Research indicates the average person lies frequently, making deception a habitual and accepted practice, even mocked in popular culture. In the financial world, numbers and statistics are manipulated to deceive, presenting a false picture of economic health. Government and medical statistics are similarly skewed, obscuring the truth about employment, inflation, and health risks. The rising tide of deception in society, fueled by vast information and manipulation, facilitates widespread deceit, making it easy to mislead millions instantly. As deception escalates, especially in the end time, the lawless one will employ unrighteous deception with false signs and wonders to mislead many, yet those who hold fast to the truth can resist being deceived.

The Truth About Deception (Part One)

CGG Weekly by David C. Grabbe

Jesus Christ warns in Matthew 24:24 that false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. Despite this warning, some interpret this to mean that the elect cannot be deceived. However, Jesus begins His prophecy in Matthew 24:4 by urging His followers to take heed that no one deceives them, suggesting that deception is a real threat even to the elect. The apostles also warn repeatedly against deception. Paul advises in Romans 16:17-18 to avoid those who cause divisions and offenses because they deceive the unsuspecting with smooth talk and flattery. In I Corinthians 3:18, he warns against self-deception by worldly wisdom, and in I Corinthians 6:9, he cautions against being deceived into thinking the unrighteous will inherit the Kingdom. He further warns in I Corinthians 15:33 against being deceived by evil company, and in Galatians 6:3, he notes that thinking oneself to be something when one is nothing is self-deception. Paul also cautions in Ephesians 5:6 against being deceived by empty words, and in Colossians 2:4-8, he warns against being deceived by persuasive words and empty deceit. In II Thessalonians 2:3, he advises not to be deceived by any means, and the author of Hebrews 3:13 warns against the deceitfulness of sin. These warnings indicate that the writers of the epistles believed it was possible for the elect to be deceived. Matthew 24:24 suggests that if there is a way to deceive the elect, the master deceiver will use it. Therefore, the elect must take measures to guard against deception, or they will be deceived if they refuse to heed these warnings. Satan, described as the father of lies and the deceiver of the whole world in Revelation 12:9, uses multiple forms of deception. While universal deception exists, it comes in various forms, and recognizing one deception does not make one immune to others. Paul notes in II Corinthians 2:11 that believers are not ignorant of Satan's devices, meaning they can begin to recognize what is of God and what is not, and discern good from bad fruit, though the danger of deception remains.

The Truth About Deception (Part Two)

CGG Weekly by David C. Grabbe

The New Testament warns that even converted members of God's church can be deceived. If one of the elect leaves himself open to deception, the father of lies will begin to lead him away. We may not be fully ignorant of his devices, but we are still susceptible to them. Carnal human nature combines the spirit in man that God bestows and the spirit that emanates from Satan, reflecting the ruler of this world. Satan's deceptions are far more complex than those of mankind, yet we can understand his methods by observing worldly strategies. The French, after World War I, built the Maginot Line to defend against Germany, assuming static defense was key. However, the Nazis bypassed it by invading through Belgium, leading to France's swift surrender. The French were deceived by their assumption of where the enemy would attack. In the 1930s, Winston Churchill warned about Hitler, but Neville Chamberlain believed he could appease Germany. Chamberlain's confidence in his abilities led him to be deceived when Hitler invaded the Sudetenland shortly after signing the Munich Agreement, plunging Europe into World War II. Edgar Allan Poe's story, The Purloined Letter, illustrates deception where a thief hides a letter in plain sight, outsmarting the police who expected a more complex hiding method. Their self-confidence led them astray. Scam artists use the long con, gaining trust over time for a grand payoff, sacrificing easier gains to build layers of deceit. The New Testament writers warn about false ministers and false brethren, who may not realize they are part of a deception. Satan has been deceiving mankind for 6,000 years, and though we can recognize some of his patterns, we are no match for his power and subtlety. Believing we have outsmarted Satan because we recognize some deceptions is itself a deception. We must ask ourselves how we differ from those who have fallen away from the truth, and whether we might follow a path of deception in the future. Confidence that it won't happen to us may be misplaced.
