Shouting Gleanings and Singing Olives (Part One)

Sermon by Charles Whitaker (1944-2021)

In the prophecy of Isaiah's apocalypse, spanning chapters 24 through 27, a vivid picture emerges of Jesus Christ's reign during the Day of the Lord, a time of divine judgment and ultimate victory over the entire earth. Amidst widespread devastation, where the earth staggers and the city of confusion is broken down, a profound change occurs as Christ returns in power and glory to take up residence in Jerusalem, establishing His rule over all kingdoms of the world. Two remnants, likened to grape gleanings and olives left on a shaken tree, are preserved by God through the cataclysm. These remnants, dispersed across the farthest reaches of the earth, from coastlands to the uttermost parts, will sing and shout in ecstatic praise of His majesty. Their songs stand in stark contrast to the wailing of the godless in the world-city of Babylon, which faces everlasting ruin at God's hand. These remnants, comprising both national Israelites and members of His church, are tasked with glorifying the victorious King of Israel, acknowledging Him as the God of heaven and earth who has mercifully saved them. As Christ reigns, He will be victorious over His enemies, ruling in the sight of His elders. His triumph marks the culmination of God's judgment, where He lays waste to mountains and hills, displaying both severity to His foes and kindness to the repentant. This reign signifies a new era, where the remnants' worldwide welcome through song and shout heralds the establishment of His divine authority over all the earth.

Trumpets and Hope

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

The shout and the sound of the trumpet announce the inauguration of the reign of Jesus Christ on the earth. His return as King of kings and Lord of lords marks the beginning of God's Kingdom, where He will subdue all nations and grant an inheritance to His people. The entire earth will be in subjection to Him, as the battle flags of all nations will belong to God, establishing Him as King over all. At His second coming, accompanied by the great sound of a trumpet, He will gather His elect from across the globe. The seventh trumpet blast, the last among others, signifies the commencement of Christ's eternal reign on earth, from which He will never be usurped. As King and Judge, He will bring rewards to His prophets and saints who fear His name, while punishing those who destroy the earth and remain in sin. When the Lord descends from heaven with a shout, the voice of an archangel, and the trumpet's blast, the dead in Christ will rise first, meeting Him in the air. The living saints will then be changed and join them in the clouds, remaining at His side forever as brothers and sisters who have fought the same fight and share the same inheritance. He will continue His descent, land on the Mount of Olives, fight against those who oppose Him, and then commence His reign. Jesus Christ, having risen from the dead with a glorious spirit body, ascended to sit at His Father's right hand as our High Priest and soon-coming King. He upholds all things by His power, and His resurrection seals the victory over sin and death, confirming His role as our Mediator. Through His living presence, the process of forgiveness and sanctification continues, ensuring that His reign and our hope of eternal life in God's Kingdom remain steadfast and sure.

The Seventh Trumpet

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

The Day of Trumpets signifies a profound turning point, marking the beginning of Jesus Christ's reign and God's government on earth. This day, central to the divine plan, heralds the return of Jesus Christ as King, coming in great wrath with an army to execute judgment upon the earth. The sounding of the seventh trumpet, as described in Revelation, announces this monumental event, proclaiming the establishment of the Kingdom of God. Loud voices in heaven declare that the kingdom of this world has become the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, signifying a transfer of power from earthly dominion to His divine sovereignty. The trumpet blast, lasting for days, underscores the gravity and duration of the events unfolding, including the seven last plagues that precede His return. These events culminate in Christ coming to finish the judgment, softening the enemies of God through successive plagues. At His coming, the saints are rewarded, and the first resurrection occurs, marking the fulfillment of the long-awaited Kingdom. The 24 elders, in humble obeisance, fall on their faces before Christ, exemplifying the proper attitude of submission and gratitude for His intervention in world affairs. They thank God for taking His great power and reigning, expressing joy that peace and righteousness will finally prevail under His rule. This reign brings both judgment and reward—punishment for the defiant nations and reward for the faithful servants, prophets, and saints who fear His name. The proclamation of Christ's coming and reigning is spoken with certainty, as if already accomplished, reflecting the assurance of God's plan. His return signals the destruction of those who harm the earth through sin, encompassing all who live in defiance unless they repent. Thus, the Day of Trumpets stands as a memorial of shouting and trumpeting, a reminder of the imminent establishment of Jesus Christ's reign over all humanity.
