The Binding of Satan
'Prophecy Watch' by Richard T. RitenbaughSatan, an uninvited and destructive intruder, disrupted the harmonious relationship between God and mankind in the Garden of Eden, bringing unbelief, fear, distrust, hatred, and division. Originally a glorious cherub covering God's throne, Satan was given the earth to govern, but his greed and pride grew as he desired to exalt his throne above all the angels and even to take God's very throne. His vanity, selfishness, and self-exaltation led him to conceive thoughts of making himself like the Most High, deceiving himself into believing he could overthrow God. These sins festered within him until he planned a coup against heaven, recruiting other angels to his cause. As a result, he became a major cause of the separation between God and man, continuing to deceive and tempt humanity, especially God's children. God has prophesied that He will one day bind Satan, breaking his power over humanity for a thousand years after Christ's return, restoring peace and facilitating harmony between God and man during the Millennium.
The Problem with Pride
Sermon by Ryan McClureSatan's pride, as illustrated in Isaiah 14:12-15, reveals the destructive nature of self-exaltation. Once in a high position in heaven, Satan fell from that exalted state, cut down to the ground due to the wickedness that entered his heart. His pride puffed up his thoughts, leading him to declare intentions to exalt his throne above the stars of God, to sit on the mount of the congregation, to ascend above the heights of the clouds, and to be like the Most High. This directional language underscores how pride drives one to overstep the position God has assigned, distorting reality by making one believe they are higher than they truly are. Such prideful thoughts inevitably lead to actions that follow closely behind, resulting in a fall from grace. In the account of Eve's temptation in Genesis 3:1-6, Satan's own experience with pride is mirrored as he manipulates her with half-truths. Knowing the effects of pride, he sows doubt about God's command, leading Eve to rationalize and question whether God had been truthful. Her pride manifests as she sees the forbidden fruit as desirable to make one wise, succumbing to the belief that she could find wisdom outside of God Himself. This early example shows how pride elevates self above God, tricking one into thinking they do not need Him and can rely on their own understanding. These instances demonstrate that pride, from its origins with Satan to its impact on humanity, distorts reality and relationships. It puffs up thoughts and opinions of oneself, leading to actions that condemn the prideful. As seen with Satan, pride causes a false perception of one's position, driving destructive ambitions. Similarly, in Eve, it fosters deception and the illusion of independence from God. The lesson remains clear: pride moves one to step beyond the place God has created for them, ultimately leading to downfall.
Living by Faith: Human Pride
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughSatan's pride, as the origin of sin, began when his heart was lifted up by his own beauty, leading him to admire himself uncontrollably. This pride transformed him into a being of powerful influence, striking fear into mankind to bring them into submission and control. Described as Leviathan, he embodies awesome power, ruling as the king of pride over the children of pride—those unconverted masses who share his characteristics and resist submission to God. His prideful spirit permeates the world, driving enmity and resistance against the sovereign will of the Father and the Son. This same pride, originating with Satan, spread to other angels and then to mankind, beginning with Adam and Eve, and continues to influence humanity. It entered their thinking through Satan's enticement, corrupting them with lofty feelings of superiority, just as it had corrupted him. Satan's declaration to be like the Most High echoes in his temptation to Adam and Eve, offering to elevate them beyond what God had assigned, fueling their desire for more through a sense of deserving greater splendor. Pride, as a powerful and subtle influence, separates individuals from God, their Creator, motivating them away from perfect compliance with Him. It is a deeply ingrained force within, borne constantly, causing resistance to the Almighty even when one perceives themselves as nothingness, a mere vapor. This pride, insatiable and destructive, drives evil ambition, self-deception, and a sense of infallibility, blinding individuals to their spiritual condition and leading them to reject God's Word. It produces a range of sinful behaviors, from self-righteousness to enmity, competitiveness, and anger, all of which hinder the responsibility to submit to the Father and the Son.
Living By Faith and Human Pride
'Personal' from John W. RitenbaughSatan's pride is a powerful and destructive force that originated within him, corrupting his wisdom and leading to his separation from the Creator. This pride, born from his self-centered feelings, spread sin to other angels and eventually to mankind, beginning with Adam and Eve. As described, he beholds every high thing and is king over all the children of pride, ruling over the unconverted masses who are not submissive to God. These individuals, like their spiritual father, become enemies of God, forcibly inducted into his service under his worldwide influence as the god of this age. His ultimate aim is to destroy God and His creation, especially man, by inducing sin through his spirit, which carries deceit, hatred, anger, competition, and destruction, all rooted in overweening pride. This prideful spirit lodges in human hearts, generating resistance to God, His law, and His purpose. It motivates self-exaltation, driving evil ambition to rise above one's assigned place, as seen in his own desire to ascend beyond his created role. Pride's deceptive and blinding power leads to self-deception, a sense of infallibility, and rejection of God's Word, ultimately resulting in destruction unless recognized and countered with repentance.
Satan (Part 4)
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughThe origin of the turmoil on earth traces back to the moment vanity arose in satan, known as helel, over his own beauty and remarkable abilities. This beauty encompassed not only his appearance but also his vast intelligence, wisdom, and the myriad skills that God had endowed him with. Over time, satan convinced himself of a lie, believing he was not receiving the recognition he deserved. Despite his exceptional qualities, he felt his position was beneath what he rightfully merited, a notion impossible to reconcile with God's nature of intrinsic love, which ensures fair treatment for all. Driven by this vanity, satan nurtured a falsehood within himself, a lie that festered until he could no longer contain it. He then fabricated another deception about the solution to his perceived injustice. He began to recruit other angels, persuading them that they too were mistreated, and proposed that the remedy was to challenge God, to dethrone Him, and thereby assume control to establish their own rules. This growing insurrection severed their connection with God, ultimately leading to warfare. Even after a millennium without his influence, with mankind under God's governance and able to make clear comparisons, satan retains the power to deceive and incite warfare against God, demonstrating his unparalleled skill in manipulation.
Pride, Humility, and Fasting
Sermon by John W. RitenbaughPride stands as a formidable barrier to seeking God and achieving oneness with Him. In Ezekiel 28:17, we find the origin of pride in Satan, whose heart was lifted up, marking the beginning of this destructive attitude. This pride, flowing from him, is serious business, as it motivates actions that damage relationships and oppose God. In Job 41:34, Satan is symbolically represented as Leviathan, the king of pride, distinct from mere animals who cannot feel such an emotion. It is he who generates pride in human beings, producing fruit that causes multitudes of problems, problems that will persist until pride is eradicated. Pride motivated Satan to speak against God, gaining sympathizers by claiming God is unfair, ultimately leading him to wage war against the Almighty. This act was hardly designed to foster friendship or unity with the Creator. Satan's pride deceived him into ignoring the reality of his status as a creation of God, blinding him to God's superior power demonstrated in creation. It inflated his perception of his own power, making him believe he could defeat God and take His place, the epitome of vanity. This same deceitful pride operates in human hearts, blinding individuals to their need for God and fostering self-sufficiency. It pushes one into conduct that ends in shame and disgrace, ignoring realities that a humble person might recognize. Pride's power lies in deceit, plowing the ground for faulty evaluations and producing sin, as it did in Satan's rebellion, separating him from God and illustrating the root cause of division.
Conspiracy Theory (Part Seven)
Commentary by John W. Ritenbaugh (1932-2023)Self-love is the essence of sin, and when pride arose within satan, it led him to believe that he was so great that he deserved greater position and authority. This pride also drove satan to appeal to his fellow angels, enticing them to improve their place in what God had created and organized. The desire for more and greater proved impossible for one-third of them to resist, and thus, they chose to join with him to improve their lot in life. The same personality who persuaded the angels continues to persuade men to take part with him in yet another attack on God, focusing them on improving their wealth and power in this world to shape political and economic conditions to their purpose.
