Jesus in the Feasts (Part One): The Bread of Life

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

In the exploration of Scripture, a profound focus emerges on Jesus Christ, particularly in the narrative of being called from Egypt, which reveals His central role in both the Old and New Testaments. As recorded in Matthew 2:13-15, an angel of the Lord instructed Joseph to flee to Egypt with the young Child and His mother to escape Herod's wrath, fulfilling the prophecy spoken through the prophet, "Out of Egypt I called My Son." This event mirrors the historical deliverance of Israel from bondage, as foretold in Hosea 11:1, where God declares, "When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son." Through this parallel, God demonstrates that just as He called Israel out of physical slavery under Pharaoh, He calls His people out of spiritual bondage to sin and its ruler, underscoring Christ's role in redemption. This calling from Egypt also reflects the personal drawing of individuals to Christ, as seen in John 6:44, where He states, "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day." The initiative of God in rescuing and redeeming His people is evident in Exodus 6:1-8, where He promises to bring Israel out from under the burdens of the Egyptians with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, taking them as His own. Similarly, in Deuteronomy 7:6-11, God's love and faithfulness are shown as the motivation for choosing Israel, redeeming them from bondage, and establishing them as a holy people. This same divine agency is mirrored in the New Testament, where Christ, through His blood, delivers His followers from the power of darkness into the Kingdom of the Son of His love, as described in Colossians 1:9-13. Thus, the narrative of being called from Egypt emphasizes Christ's pivotal role as the One who leads His people to freedom, paralleling the historical exodus with a spiritual liberation. His preeminence is affirmed as He guides and sustains, ensuring that those drawn to Him are prepared for the inheritance of the saints in light, fulfilling the Father's purpose through His redemptive work.
