The Model Prayer (Part Six): Our Daily Bread
Bible Study by Richard T. RitenbaughIn the Model Prayer, Jesus Christ includes the phrase, "Give us this day our daily bread," highlighting not just a request for physical sustenance but a deeper acknowledgment of God's providence. Bread, as the staff of life, represents food in general and extends to all necessities God provides, such as water, air, shelter, and clothing, sustaining human life second by second. Through this prayer, Jesus urges us to recognize God's abundant provision and to present our extraordinary needs to Him as the Giver of all good things. The concept of daily bread echoes the miracle of manna in the wilderness, where God supplied food to the Israelites each day for 38 years, teaching them to trust in His daily provision. This daily miracle, where manna appeared each morning in sufficient quantities, served as a test of faith, as it would spoil if kept overnight. Jesus' use of "our daily bread" may imply a request for what is necessary for the day, aligning with His teaching in the Sermon on the Mount to exercise faith in God to meet our needs without worry, focusing instead on seeking His Kingdom and righteousness. Beyond physical nourishment, daily bread also signifies spiritual sustenance. God draws a connection between the physical bread He provided and the importance of living by His Word, emphasizing that true life requires obedience to His instructions. Jesus reinforces this when resisting temptation, affirming that spiritual life surpasses physical needs. Thus, requesting daily bread includes a plea for God's instruction through His Word to guide us on the path to His Kingdom, encouraging continual growth in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Furthermore, Jesus identifies Himself as the Bread of Life, the ultimate source of sustenance who gives life to the world. When we ask for our daily bread, we seek complete nourishment for body, mind, and spirit, desiring an ongoing relationship with Him through learning, obeying, and imitating His example. This request encompasses far more than mere food; it is a plea for the life-giving sustenance that only comes from God Himself.
