Pillars Stand for Something!

Article by John O. Reid

The Parthenon, with its many beautiful pillars, stands as a timeless example of architecture, having supported its upper structure through storms, wars, fires, and earthquakes for over 2500 years, even amidst the pollution of modern Athens. Similarly, the ancient columns at Corinth, carved from single massive stones, and the pillars of the Acropolis, fitted together with bronze locks, continue to stand erect and beautiful, faithfully upholding their roofs after thousands of years. These enduring structures remind us that God calls us to be faithful pillars in His house. He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, promising a permanent position of support and honor. A pillar's primary function is support, synonymous with strength, backbone, and sustenance, but it can only fulfill this role if set on a solid foundation. Without a firm base, a pillar would shift and harm the entire structure, teaching us the importance of a steadfast foundation in harmony with Christ and His purpose. As pillars, we must build upon this foundation by growing in grace and knowledge, applying ourselves in solid study, and putting what we learn into practice. God expects us to bolster, strengthen, and sustain each other, as no single pillar can support a building alone. In His Family, we are called to help and support one another, serving through physical acts like giving rides, aiding the ill, and listening to those in need, as well as through consistent prayer for all of God's people. Pillars must be joined properly to the structure to serve their function, not standing alone or becoming pushy, but encouraging, edifying, and wise in fellowship with brethren. Pillars also stand as witnesses, just as Joshua set up a pillar in Gilgal to remind Israel of God's mighty hand in their crossing of the Jordan River. We are called to be pillars that testify to God's way of life, reflecting His character, honesty, love, and faithfulness in all we do, bearing His name honorably with the excitement of our calling. The reward for being God's pillars is profound: becoming a pillar of perfect character with a firm position in His Temple, remaining close to Him forever, bearing His name with all its majesty and authority, and working with Him at His headquarters for eternity. As pillars, we will extend the strength of the foundation, Jesus Christ, to support billions who follow, standing unswervingly amidst life's tremors and shakeups. While the Parthenon will eventually crumble, those who stand firmly for God's way and support His people will not fall, looking forward to a bright and wonderful future.

Pillars in the Temple of God

Sermonette by Ted E. Bowling

Christ says He will make those who overcome 'pillar[s] in the temple of My God.' The pillars of a building support its roof and the structure as a whole.

Letters to Seven Churches (Part Nine): Philadelphia

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

When Jesus warns us not to let anyone take our crown, He encourages us to endure over the long-haul and not bask in the glory of a brief, victorious accomplishment.

Letters to Seven Churches (Part Eight): Overcoming

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Each of the letters in Revelation 2 and 3 speak of overcoming. By examining those churches, we can understand what we are up against and what we must do.

Asa

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

Asa left a few things undone, losing steam in his later years and playing it safe. Idolatry was so ingrained in the land that Asa grew weary in well-doing.

Foundations

Feast of Tabernacles Sermon by John O. Reid

The pillars of the Parthenon were fitted together in sections. It is impossible for these pillars to stand without a solid foundation.

'But I Say to You' (Part Five): Oaths

Sermon by Richard T. Ritenbaugh

We must grow in personal integrity, providing a witness for the truth to those around them, not needing the crutch of an oath to guarantee our integrity.

Be There Next Year

'Personal' from John W. Ritenbaugh

Members of God's church usually come home from the Feast of Tabernacles with renewed strength. Yet, some fall away each year. Here's how to stay the course.
