Are These the Last Days? (Part 1)
'Prophecy Watch' by Richard T. RitenbaughAre we really so certain these are the last days? How can we know for sure? What does the Bible give as evidence that the last days are here?
'Unless Those Days Were Shortened . . .'
'Prophecy Watch' by David C. GrabbeIn Jesus' foretelling of the time just before His return, He declares that the coming great tribulation will be so severe that unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved, yet for the elect's sake those days will be shortened. Parallel prophecies in Jeremiah and Daniel describe this period with similar language of unparalleled trouble for Jacob and the nations. The overarching threat is not human technology such as nuclear weapons, genetic modifications, or artificial intelligence, but the days of vengeance foretold throughout Scripture. Luke's account places the epicenter of this tribulation in Jerusalem and Judea, where Gentile forces will trample the city until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled, leading to warfare, captivity, and the fulfillment of all that has been written. These days of vengeance arise from unfaithfulness to the covenant, as God brings the sword and pestilence against Israel and Judah for breaking His commandments. The same pattern extends to the Gentiles, whose evil hearts lead them to oppress God's people and incur His judgment in turn. Biblical precedents show God destroying all flesh in the pre-Flood world and threatening to consume Israel entirely at various points, yet always preserving a remnant. Prophecies throughout the Old and New Testaments, including Zechariah, Isaiah, and II Thessalonians, reveal that Christ will return to execute vengeance first on rebellious Israel and then on all nations that refuse to obey the gospel. In Revelation this vengeance appears as the wrath of God and the Lamb, poured out in seals, trumpets, and bowls that bring destruction so complete that only divine intervention prevents the annihilation of every living thing. The resurrection of Jesus confirms that a day of righteous judgment has been appointed, leaving humanity without excuse after the gospel is preached worldwide. Although such wrath may appear contrary to God's love, it reflects His commitment to halt the trajectory of rebellion and injustice, granting mercy to the elect while settling accounts with those who persist in evil.
